Robert Geathers - I will be honest I am not high on Geathers and would not mind seeing his mega buck contract for his injury riddled career and lack of production the last three years be cut.
Jamaal Anderson - He is a go between DE/DT, not a pure guy that is a journeyman at this point.
Derrick Harvey - He is a 1st round bust that never did anything worth while, hopefully he can revive his career, but it is a long shot. Might be a victim of a numbers game anyways.
Michael Johnson - A good young player that gives 100%, but he gets swallowed by decent RT's and disappears in some games. Consistancy is a big issue for him.
Carlos Dunlap - By far our best DE, but he also disappears in games whether it is lack of motor, conditioning or his nagging injuries, he just is not seen at times in games.
Our DT position is by far our deepest, best position on the team.
We just drafted a couple more guys, and there is goign to be hard pressed times to get them all into t he rotation on a consistant basis to make them all happy. Also, some of these guys are pretty big.
Question 1: Should we consider implementing more DT's on the outside at DE in running/rushing situations and go with a more heavy defensive front in 4-3, or should we really consentrate on LB next year and try to move to a more 3-4 type defense with a good rotation on the line with 1 DE being used (Dunlap/Johnson/Anderson) along with two DT's for bulk (while rotating them)?
Right now, we do not have the LB core to pull this off, but should this be a priority next year come FA and draft time?
Question 2: Or should we go after a guy like Osi, cut Geathers to retain half the money needed to sign him. Geathers signed a 36-40+ million dollar contract for like 6 years or something like that..he is getting to the end of it...saving 6 mill on Geathers could afford us a great opportunity to sign a guy like Osi who is a solid proven DE who can make our DL that much better if we stay in a 4-3 front.
We are also getting very close to next year where we are going to be forced to be at 99% spending cap, and a decent contract to strengthen our line even more could go a long ways to getting there without reworking everyones contract to give them more money early: Green, Dalton, Atkins, etc.
