Yeah, but Vernon Wells was an attractive expiring contract. They can deal him to move the contract probably.

The Pads stink with a 67M payroll. The Angels have two players on their roster making around 50M so I guess things could be worse when we look at it like that. I just hope the Padres don't finish dead last. I wouldn't mind the 1st pick in the draft, I just don't want the worst record.

I saw a Tweet last year, can't remember who said it, but is anybody else annoyed that their name (The Los Angeles Angels) translates to "The The Angels Angels"?

The marlins are terrible, their rotation (outside of a few good young arms) is a mess, terrible middle relief and absolutely no hitting. It's possible that they could only win 50 games this year

Not to mention that they're virtually hopeless and will have an empty stadium for home games.

Padres fans are becoming increasingly worried that they're going to gut what talent we have and promote our prospects to the bigs too early. I don't know, maybe that's a good thing. It's early and I don't think we're going to have the worst record but I can see us being in the bottom 5.

I believe that's exactly what the Padres should do. I'm not saying bring up guys like Fried or Whisler, but it's time to see some of the young guys get a chance. If they're going to lose at least give some young guys experience.

There's no sense in gutting a team, unless you got tons of fat that needs trimming. There's no prospect the padres will get that can replace headley if they trade him. He is not quite a piece to build around but he's a great contributor to keep around. Padres need to lock him up for 3 years to make the rebuilding go smoother. You need good hitters to protect your younger hitters in the lineup. Street is dealable b/c a closer has a lot of trade value and is not a great piece to keep around when you're rebuilding. Quentin is another hitter to keep around. I'm sort of on the fence with Volquez, I think he's a great on the back end of a rotation but he wants to be paid and treated like an ace

Volquez has not proven himself to be the ace. The most valuable pitcher we've had over the last 2 seasons has been Clayton Richard.

The good thing is that no one ever wants to leave the Padres and players are usually more than willing to offer a SD discount. Hell, would YOU want to leave SD for just about anywhere else?

It's going to be very interesting to see how the Headley situation plays out. Homestly, I don't think the Padres are anywhere close to willing to deal him without a massive return and the only team I see willing to do something incredible is probably the Jays because they're all-in this season and an upgrade at 3rd might be what they perceive as the last piece of the puzzle to make it work. I wouldn't be surprised to see Headley do an extension with the Pads, unless he's totally confident in himself, in which case he'll play the contract out and look for $125M in free agency.

I'll be shocked if Chase resigns with the Padres.
