Wow! I can't believe this actually was overturned. Why the hell did they wait until Kovy's contract? Pronger and Hoss both have the same type deal.

Because it's the National Hockey League.

So what does Kovy do now? Do you think he goes to the KHL? Or does he try to get another deal done here?

Ok for the last time Pronger's contract is a 35+ which means the following for those of you who have no idea how the cap works.

The 35-and-Older Clause:

* When a player aged 35 or older signs a multi-year contract, his average salary is counted against the team's salary cap during every year of the contract, even if the player retires before the contract is up.

* If the player is sent to the minor leagues, his cap hit is reduced by $100,000.

So let's drop how bad the Pronger contract is since in all likelihood he will play almost the entire length of the contract and the Flyers will still be footing the bill when he does retire if there are any years left. The Hossa contract however is both front loaded and not a 35+ which means his contract shoudl have been looked at more closely.

fwiw, Pronger's contract is in fact a +35 deal, but that was a Flyer error.
it was structured to be similar, but they fucked up.

(contract was signed when he was 34, but came into effect after he turned 35)

They fucked up so much that they didn't even fight the NHL on it or dispute it in anyway? Even with him being 34 when when he signed. Seems like maybe all the Flyers hate has gotten to everyone's heads.

I have to back Puckhead here and I doubt he is making his case out of hate.
There is certainly room to think that they possibly had in mind that it would not be considered a 35+ signing. None of us know for sure.
Edit: I guess I am actually on the fence since I am saying no one really knows but I think that was their intention as well.

Here's what the CBA states: All Player Salary and Bonuses earned in a League Year by a Player who is in the second or later year of a multi-year SPC which was signed when the Player was age 35 or older (as of June 30 prior to the League Year in which the SPC is to be effective), regardless of whether, or where, the Player is playing, except to the extent the Player is playing under his SPC in the minor leagues , in which case only the Player Salary and Bonuses in excess of $100,000 shall count towards the calculation of Actual Club Salary.

Follow that? We tried to get clarification from the NHL as to whether or not Pronger's extension falls under the "over-35 rule," but have yet to receive a response. Darren Dreger of TSN, however, reports on Wednesday that it is an over-35 deal, and that the cap hit will remain, even if Pronger retires after next season. The Flyers, reportedly, disagree.

not at all. Flyers are one of my favourite teams in the east.
this thing was pretty well documented when it happened.

the last one implies the Flyers lawyers looked into fighting it, but didn't have a case.

If I'm misinterrepting this I apologize but being close the the situation and even re-reading most of those articles it states that the Flyers were fine with it being a 35+. Which in my mind means that they did not in fact set out to circumvent the current CBA. Chris Pronger is currently 35 to believe he could play until he is 42 is not out of the question with the way he conditions himself, much like Lidstrom(or the immortal Chris Chelios). My point was more that even though a lot of people want to make it sound like the Pronger deal was to circumvent the cap, it seems(to me at least) it was more about stretching his hit out just enough to keep the young core in Philly for years to come(which thanks to Homer will be hard enough as it is).

However comparing that to the Hossa deal(which also has him playing until he is 42) which is not only extremely front-loaded(and probably overpaying him), but also there is no gauranteed cap hit. Those are the kind of deals that are in fact ruining the NHL. I for one believe that if a player signs a contract for any longer then lets say 7 years(just throwing that out there) that irregardless of their age or playing status their hit should count against the cap.

I think the gist of it is that the Flyers thought that Pronger would be 34 when the deal went through, meaning that even if he retired after playing 1 season, the Cap Hit would come off the books.

The League was saying that the deal won't kick in till he's 35. Meaning that even if he did retire after 1 season, the Cap Hit would remain for the rest of years left on the contract.
