wow...so LA is gonna take the lower cap hit...for that piece of crap deal? seriously...when's the NHL going to grow a pair and STOP this. it's GOING to handicap a team someday, and people are GOING to be pissed off.

they can't do shit about it until the CBA expires. It WILL be a hot button topic.
Solution is probably to limit the variance allowed in contracts (eg. no year's salary can be less than 50% - or whatever number - of the maximum year's salary)

In all reality these are a risk-reward type of deal. The team can't force a player to retire, so that cap hit could very well be well above the player's production near the end of the contract, and the team's on the hook for the money poorly spent. Now if a team wants to risk financially handcuffing themselves down the road for a better opportunity to win now, I have no problem with allowing them. But deals like this could just as easily result in cap hell in 10 years as they could result in the team getting a bargain-basement steal on a star player.
