Yeah, with the way he was scoring, he probably would have hit 40 again. I would be thrilled if they gave him Richards type money, but that is unrealistic right now. I'm not saying Carter is worth 6.75, but do you honestly think Koivu is? Just the name of the game sometimes.

Yes, Carter is better than Koivu, and should probably get more money, but you have to consider the situation. Koivu is getting paid that money because he is by far the best player on his team. Carter is not the best player on the team and he should get paid accordingly. I'd say he gets somewhere between Richards and Briere, mostly depending on how long he signs. If he doesn't get traded.

If some team wants to pay him with Koivu's contract as the standard, by all means take the four 1st round picks and use the cap space on a goalie, since there's a bunch available next year. I can't see Vokoun re-signing on a bad team at his age.

All spot on comments. I just don't see him signing for less than six. Realistically, he'll end up around 6.5 - if he remains a Flyer.

So if Koivu is worth 6.75 per year, what will Jeff Carter get? I'm scared.

I would be more concerned about Richards than Carter since Richards is a center just like Koivu.

This contract doesn't bode well for the Islanders in two years when Tavares will be a RFA. He's going to break Wang's bank.

1. They're both centers as of right now.
2. Richards is signed for another 10 years or so. He got a 12 year extension a few years ago.

Put yourself in Carter's shoes. Wouldn't you expect at least 7 million per season?

If I'm Carter, then I've realized that I've probably hit my peak in my career and will never get 46 goals again. It could happen, but it's not likely because too many things went right for me that year. So, I want to make sure that I am paid with that season fresh in mind and not in a few years when I am downgraded from potential a 45 goalscorer to a perennial 35 goal scorer. Therefore, I am more inclined to taking a long-term deal now than multiple short-term deals during my career. As the trend goes, in order to take a long-term deal, I'd have to take less money per year, but I don't mind because I know a 9 year, $60M deal will get me more than three 3-year deals worth $22M, $18M, and $16M respectively. All of this assuming I don't go play for Sather at which point I'm basing my salary demands off Derek Boogaard.

But that's just me.
