I don’t mind the public courses but Chambers Bay was terrible IMO. I’m just a traditionalist, I have a vision what I’d like to see in a traditional setup which is narrow fairways, penal rough and fast greens. Shinnocock this year was ideal.

Never understood why par is almost always reduced to 70 on a par 72 course for the U.S. Open. It doesn't make a bit of difference what par is.

If you give touring pros four par 5 holes, over 4 rounds the USGA is concerned they will beat the course up.

So? Par is just a number we make up. The score is all that matters. The test is the same whether the par is 70 or 72.

Yeah but the USGA doesn't look at it like that.

If par is 72 with 4 par 5 holes, the score relative to par will be lower....they care about that....should they? That's the real question. Why do they care?

I think they wanted to use the moniker...Defender Of Par so the score relative to par became a much bigger point of emphasis...course setup followed suit with thick ankle deep rough a few feet off the fairway and greens with barely enough grass on them to call them greens...in fact they got so obsessed with it that they went overboard several times.

Yeah, I'll never forget how they let that green at Shinnicock get away from them and they had to throw water on it before every group tee'd off. They looked ridiculous.
Maybe the "protecting par " thing is the reason but it seems silly. If you shoot 280 for the four days its the same score whether its even par or 8 under.

You see the tournaments with -16, -18 ...that is fairly normal but it's also seen as the players dominating the course to a degree.

The US Open to me seems to like their event at no higher than about 6 under. I think they really hate it higher than that.

The USGA has to make it tough but they can't do it with the rough. That is seen as a ratings killer.
Now matter how far ahead they plan, the weather that week could change everything.

By dropping it to 70 ....all of the guys bunched up at even are now 2 over.
That is what the USGA wants ...most players over par.

Yeah, we're saying the same thing I think...the score relative to par matters to the USGA...obviously the negative number...for a while, I don't think they much cared how much over par the number was.
