the outfield has been a disaster for almost a decade, so it's hard to keep track of the depths of awfulness

In 2007 we had a really good outfield.

Jose Guillen, Raul Ibanez and Ichiro all had an OPS of over .800 that year. Without digging more into it, I'd assume that they had combined the best batting average of any OF in the majors that year.

It probably shouldn't matter but stuff like Lomo pinch hitting for Montero in the 9th really bugs me.
If you are gonna give the guy a chance don't limit him to only facing lefties. Lomo isn't gonna save the day there, he is a below average offensive first baseman. They were down 4 runs in the 9th at that point so they weren't winning anyway. But shit like pinching hitting for Smith and Miller anytime a lefty comes in really bothers me. That's why this team is so inept in certain situations. I probably shouldn't rant about it but I am sick of platoons and a manager that cant manage them anyway.

Pinch hitting for Smith will always be stupid and it is dumb to pinch hit for Montero, like he is going to be given a fair shake anyways but let him sink or swim fully. They need guys to gain confidence and you can't get confidence when they don't let you attempt to succeed.

What's the logic behind DHing Guti and playing Cruz and Trumbo in the OF spots?

Guti isn't the defensive player he once was, but he's certainly significantly better than those two.

That was a pathetic defensive effort by Cruz, it looked like he called Cano off, Cano probably could've got to that.
