He said its about chewing tobacco. He said he quit in camp and then started back and then has quit again. He did not say it in the Bleacher Report article I read but Im assuming thats what was causing his prolonged slump. In fact I believe a few posters thought this was the case weeks ago.

Yea ... sure Josh.

When I quit smoking I gained 5 pounds and could taste food. Didn't affect my batting average one iota.

I used to use chewing tobacco and Skoal daily. Didn't think I could play a round of golf without a pinch between my cheek and gum. Gave it up and never thought much about it. Not saying it's easy for Josh, but I really have a hard time believing it effected his ability to layoff pitches out of the strike zone. Sounds like the BS from last year about his inability to hit in day games.

Just came across the site and figured I join in. Seems like some good ranger talk here.

Cool. Well, welcome. We got some good posters here. Most are pretty knowledgable. Occasionally we get a little heated, but don't let that get to ya. We're all just passionate rangers fans. One word of advice, making statements out of ignorance and chicken little attitudes will not be met with kindness. Enjoy your time here, and jump right in.

The Star-Telegram expanded a little more on Josh's problem. The tobacco issue was just part of Josh's problem, according to him.

More specifically, his problem was a lack of self-discipline. Josh spoke about the importance of being disciplined as part of being a good Christian and quoted a Bible verse. He said that lately in his life he had failed to show discipline, both at the plate and in terms of quitting chewing tobacco. To most people, this lapse in discipline would seem at most a minor bother. But Josh said that following God is such a huge part of staying clean and living a good life. So to a person who needs that discipline just to stay afloat, starting to slip is a big deal. He saw it as a personal flaw and it really weighed on his mind.

So that's what was eating at Josh- worrying about his own lack of discipline. Maybe it's just an excuse, maybe it's not. I've never been any kind of addict nor do I pretend to know what he's thinking and feeling. BS or not, I don't care as long as he rights the ship and reverts back to MVP form.

I'm a recovering addict, so I understand what he goes thru on a daily basis. Every single day it's a struggle and the thing that no one outside an addict understands is the struggle is not always the craving for whatever your drug of choice is, a big part of the struggle is how your loved ones look at you, they love you, they support you but they always have that thought in their head that you are not telling the truth, that you're hiding something. If anything is off by a little bit their first thought is he is using again. That wears on you really bad. Having to constantly defend yourself becomes a real load to carry. What makes it worse is that as an addict you know you brought it all on yourself. So that's something else that wears u down.

With josh and his Jesus thing, I can see where it doubles his problems. Not only does he have his family to worry about but also his belief that he is living for the Lord and letting him down as well. I don't live that way, maybe I should buy I don't....I feel I have enough people I'm trying to prove things to. If it works for josh then good for him. I hope it works out.

If you go back to the time of the Crusades and look at the pros and cons of religion since then you'll find that it has created as many problems, or more than it has ever solved.

Religion isn't the problem al. It's the corrupt people that twist it to fill their own gains that cause problems.

If what josh says is really the case, I feel for the guy. If not being able to quit chewing tobaco has conflicted him so greatly that he basically can't perform his job, that guy's entire life must ride the razor's edge between coping and complete dispare. i can't even begin to understand how that must be.

I agree with Romeo. Don't want the forum to go off and debate religion ... but when men do bad things in the name of religion or things for their own gratification ... that's a problem. Josh is a Christian ... let's leave his choice of how he incorporates it in his life to Josh.

Exactly. Even if religion didn't exist, evil men would find other reasons for furthering their causes and to justify their actions. I'm not an overly religious person myself, but I have no problem with people who are and who use it to guide their lives and give them a sense of purpose.

Religion makes people stupid. You got 500 different different churchs with 500 different belief systems.
