man pleads guilty to felony meth, gun charges

A 30-year-old man is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 4 after pleading guilty to felony drug and gun charges, United States Attorney Benjamin Wagner said.

Jose Balderon Calderon -- also known as Jose Manual Valencia Mendoza -- pleaded guilty Aug. 12 to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and to using a firearm during a drug transaction, he said.

Four others in the five-person methamphetamine-distribution ring pleaded guilty to similar charges in a federal Fresno court, prosecutors said.

Calderon, of Newark, was arrested last year after delivering several pounds of methamphetamine to a Ceres man who had negotiated to sell the drugs for $120,000 to an undercover agent, authorities said.

He is facing a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $4.25 million fine, prosecutors said.
