It's not the fact that we don't have 5-star athletes that's holding us back.....
It's the fact that the athletes we have haven't been fully groomed yet (we did have one of the youngest teams in the FBS this season) and the coaching staff didn't do the hottest job of preparing the kids to play every game this season.
Suddenly bringing in bluechips isn't going to make us a better team. It would in the NFL.......but not in college football.
There is one thing that recruiting certain players can give you an advantage in.............and that is speed. You look and see how Oregon recruits........they just find lightening fast players on the offensive side of the ball.
If you can use your recruiting skillz to get speed, you can put together a potent offense.
Other positions, however, such as Offensive Lineman for instance, can be filled by almost any fat bastard (or potentially fat bastard) that you can find who has decent footwork. You can almost coach an athlete to do anything you want them to do..........and you can make a guy as fat as you need him to be.........................
But you can't teach a guy to be fast enough to blow by people. Speed can't be learnt........it can only be a personal trait that you have.
Keep in mind Papuchis took over the d line and it was the same damn line just horrible play this season... Whatever decision Bo makes had better be a good one and show on the field right now. We're well beyond making excuses for him as a HC.
Right now, Pap runs special teams, d line, recruiting coordinator and deservedly so. He is good at what he does. But you spread him out too far, and I think one or more of those roles suffer as a result. There's only so many hours in a day.
Someone else needs to either take one or more of those jobs off his hands in order to promote him. Plus, that person needs to meet or exceed the job Pap had done in those role(s).
I like the idea of Stoops if he really wants the job, and it sounds like he does. Give Pap some time to learn more and gain some experience.
