Probably the only guy they could find to take the job.

First Elway emulates Ozzie Newsome, and now the 49ers think they can do the same.....hmmmm. The other way this could go is he becomes another Matt Millen.

I think whoever takes on any position in this organization is crazy. There's too much "" bad " going on all over this team. Going to be long uphill battle to get this relevant again and the lack of patience and insight they lack spells celled dweller for some time imo

Why is Frisco trying to emasulate Denver and how did Elway emasulate Newsome?

As for the Lynch hiring. Interesting. I wish him luck though I tend to agree with randymon. Things are gonna get worse there before they get better. Be cool if Lynch was the catalyst to bypass the worse and get on towards the better.

Mainly just citing the three cases as former players being hired to fill GM roles for the team. Although, unlike in San Francisco, both the Ravens and Broncos brought back their own former players, as Newsome played for the Browns team that would become the Ravens, and Elway played for Denver. Both also have a good eye for seeing the talent in a player and how it fits into the team.

Sorry to lose Lynch from the Denver community - he did a lot of stuff. Best of luck to him in SF. Best of luck to little Shanny too.

I don;t like SF trying to emulate Denver and starting to poach our personnel. I guess when you are a top organization, teams will try to emulate and pick your brain.

I'd rather it's the 49ers doing it than someone like the Chiefs!

Wonder if lynch does

There are some very big differences in my opinion of Lynch compared to Elway

1) This isn't the first GM job that Elway has ever had. He cut his teeth working with the Colorado Crush actually helping them win a Championship. While it isn't experience at the NFL level it is still at least some.

2) Elway has been a huge businessman building up some businesses that have made him millions upon millions of dollars. He has shown an ability to hire the right people that know the business industry and know how to make it work well.

3) Maybe the most important difference is that Elway is about as cut throat as anybody in the NFL not named Bill Belichick. He really does have very little attachment to coaches or players. So he doesn't hold onto them longer than he should. Can Lynch make those same tough decisions when the 49ers absolutely need it to happen?

4) You are right Elway has a scout's eye for the game. His dad was a long time scout and worked with Elway a lot on this craft. This is part of what so many missed when Elway was hired and people calling him just a figure head that would fall flat on his face. Elway has worked in many parts of the NFL business at different times so not like he came into this whole thing blind.

To me the biggest thing for Lynch will be who he surrounds himself with. Elway surrounded himself with great football and business minded people. He hired one of the best Cap guru's in the business to make sure to get everything balanced. He had great football minds that some were already here and others he helped bring in that were not just going to be yes men. They could discuss and come to an agreement on what they were seeing.

Love John Lynch. He's in over his head.
Maybe, but I have a sense that he probably knows what he doesn't know and will surround himself, and listen to, good people who have experience.

If Lynch can get a good head of scouting and can sit in a room with everyone and say this guy can play, this guy can't, he should be successful. That is the art of the draft that can't be taught. All the other stuff he can delegate or OJT.
