Ron Brown has mad some inflammatory anti-gay statements that has drawn negative attention to our beloved Nebraska Football program. Does Brown need to sit down and shut up or continue speaking out in support of his beliefs, even if it puts the Nebraska Football program in a negative light on the national stage?

And...

GO!...

Ron Brown can say whatever he wants as a private citizen

agreed. he is allowed to speak out against a law in a public forum. now if he was saying that this is the stance of the University, i could see where people are upset. I don't understand how people don't get it...just because you are a public figure doesn't mean that you lose your rights as a citizen.

He has the right to say what he wants. The university has the right to protect their image and fire anyone for inflammatory comments. Right or wrong, Ron Brown represents the University. Especially when he goes to that thing a month or so ago and lists his address as Memorial Stadium.

I completely disagree with him but would never say he can't say it. If you are going to speak your mind be aware of the consequences. Just because you have a freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say what ever you want and not have consequences. Like yelling fire in a crowded place or gun in an airport.

If they fire him, I understand and support it. If they keep him, then fine. I won't lose any sleep over it either way. The problem is that with the over sensitivity of how everything affects recruiting, him saying this stuff is much worse than Bo being a psycho on the sideline.

everyone seems to bring this up whenever there is a freedom of speech issue, but that is entirely different. if you yell fire in a crowded place, you are creating a dangerous situation. the first amendment protects citizens speaking their opinions on government (exactly what RB was doing). if you can't be fired for being pro-gay rights, i don't see how you can be fired for being against it.

I was just using that as an example of you are certainly allowed to say what you want but that doesn't mean there aren't consequences to some things you say.

He can speak his mind against government all he wants. His employer can also fire him for creating a firestorm or painting them in a bad light. I made a comment on FB the other day about one of my employers and got written up for it because it went against their "media policy". I disagreed with their stance but also knew that it was their right to do that because I painted the company in a bad light. Like I said before, whether it is right or wrong Brown represents the University as an employee. Especially when he lists his address as Memorial Stadium.

I'm convinced now Ron Brown wants to be a "martyr" and be fired for this. It wasn't some innocent mistake that he listed Memorial Stadium as his address. He's been warned about that before.

"To be fired for my faith would be a greater honor than to be fired because we didn't win enough games."

He's bat shit crazy and he's hell bent on making an ass out of Bo and Tom.

Screw this old news……

Ron Brown told it like it is… from his perspective, not from the “U”.
He made a bad decision to use the “U’s” address as his location but other than that, he said what needed to be said. I too agree with his thoughts here and have no problem sharing them as my viewpoint. Don’t like my viewpoint? Piss off… I don’t like the direction our society is heading!

Look, everyone has an opinion and can tell me to piss off too… and I am not going to lose sleep over it…

If he was not in the public’s eye (high profile position), this would not be a story!

The fact is both Ron and ESPN have used Ron’s fame as a way (platform) to get attention. Now from Ron’s perspective, he really doesn’t care if he is fired for his beliefs and his rights to profess his faith to those who care to listen.

Now on ESPN’s reasoning to re-publish old news… well, football season is a long ways away… they had time to kill and needed some additional material to bring attention (listeners, watchers and readers) to them… and by the way, we are picking up some steam in recruiting… so why not…
ESPN has their favorites list too and we are not on it… <-- Nah, I am just kidding…

I would go to war at Ron’s side “ANY DAY”. Better to die for your beliefs and whats right, than to live in shame!

Just adding to my post count…

And nobody is arguing today… so Piss off Jed!

:fencing:

I agree with Pants here, and that he is entitled to his rights, just as well as I am to question his ability to distinguish fantasy and reality. Martyrdom is not a pleasantly traveled road, especially for those who are intentionally setting the stage for it.

He is publicly advocating discrimination of gay people when his place of business has strict anti-discriminatory policies against gay people.

Listen I don't feel very strongly about gay rights. I do believe they should be treated like every other human being on this planet, but you won't see me marching in the streets or picketing.

The angle I'm concerned with is how this is going to look for the University. He's actively trying to hurt our public image. Obviously it's not his primary motivation but that's what he's doing. He's trying to be fired and he doesn't care.

Anything worthwhile... typically has to be fought for or don't come easy and or is against all odds... Christianity was once the norm but is now the abnormal... I believe this was foretold as well...

Not sure this would be considered martyrdom, but if it is... and the end of his career is near... he knew what path he elected to go down and will live with it and be proud of his stance!

And make an ass out of the person who has to fire him.

I wish he would just pipe down. He's gotten way too big for his britches.

He's always been a bit nutty, but we somehow always managed to keep it under wraps.

I blame the PSU fiasco.

Nah, people will perceive that there was no choice (per our ever changing society and their magnificent perspective of doing what’s right, equal and fair for all).... if it was to occur!

What he did at PSU was FAR from a fiasco

Just saying it gave him this new platform.

We had his crazy confined to the state of Nebraska. Now everyone recognizes him and will pay more attention to what he's doing. For good or bad.

I'm half kidding here.
