@TheFourthPeriod:
As @ice_chip has reported, Rutherford will step down as Hurricanes GM this off-season (could stay as Pres), with Francis set to take over.
@SNHockeyCentral:

Hurricanes' Jim Rutherford expected to give up GM duties at season's end. per @ice_chip

Wonder if this will shut down the rumors of Eric Staal or Skinner being dealt in the Summer?

Does Francis have any background in this?

Not speaking to him specifically since I don't know, but I'm not a big fan of assuming that a guy will be good for you as a GM just because he was a good player.

i think it will only increase them.. i've watched quite a few canes games lately (roommate is a fan) and the speculation seemed to be the two options were massive overhaul (gm, coach, on down to the players) or stay the course, keep the gm and coach and see what you can get out of this group of players

might be talking out of my ass here, but i think francis has been in some management type role with them for a few years.. i thought i remembered that happening?

You would think I'd know that given that they're as close as I get to a local team right now, but the coverage in Charlotte is pretty weak still and I just can't bring myself to care.

I agree with both points - having Ron Francis as the GM will only spark the discussions - if Jim Rutherford wasn't going to move those guys, then whoever is the new guy will probably see differently and at the very least consider moving them, it doesn't mean he will but he can seriously consider them

People don't realize, Carolina has been a god awful team since winning the cup - they've only made the playoffs one other time and people act like this is a team that's still good? Making the playoffs once in eight years in the new NHL is awful, that's almost as bad as the Oilers and Leafs failures

As for Ron Francis, he's been with them for a few years now so he's probably been groomed for this situation

from wiki:

Ronald Michael Francis, Jr. (born March 1, 1963) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey centre who played 23 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Hartford Whalers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs. He now serves as the director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes. In September, 2012, under the name Playmakers Management, along with four other investors, Ron became a minority owner of the Carolina Hurricanes.[1] [2]

guess the coverage in raleigh is a little better :)

I would figure. I think Karmanos failed pretty badly at attempting to regionalize the team. Nobody in Charlotte cares. For the record, I'm not bad-mouthing the idea of moving the team to Raleigh in the first place, but I think they should have just called them the Raleigh Hurricanes.

I worked in Atlanta for 18 months before the Thrashers came to town, but the Atlanta Journal-Constitution had a College Football section as well as a Sports section (September through January at any rate). Braves dominated the Sports section, Falcons next and then the Hawks. I can't imagine the Thrashers got much coverage.

How awful for you...

lol - Atlanta isn't a great sports town, but it has awesome night life, great restaurants, and there is a ton of things to do. From a quality of life perspective, it's tough to beat.

Except for the sweaty-balls heat and humidity in the summer and traffic.

(I know, not really one to talk in Charlotte either).

Yeah, there's a reason they call it Hot-lanta.

/My wife and I are pretty avid tennis players and there was a eight court facility only 10 minutes away from our place. We would have 50-55 Fahrenheit degree days in January and there were plenty of days when we would have the entire facilty to ourselves. Good times.

Something something stabby white suit something

The husband of one of my wife's best friends from college is a music producer that focuses on R&B and Rap. He had an artist that wanted to play "freaknic", so he went along. Mind you he is a 6'6" 300lb guy with dreadlocks. He came back and he was like "When I get my army of minions, that place is the first on the list to get wiped off the map".

I think he did not have a good time.
