Wondering if Jay being an up and coming HC candidate the last couple of years had anything to do with John hesitating a return to the coaching ranks...maybe John figured he didn't want to take a potential landing spot way from his brother during his run of interviews. Now that Jay has landed in Washington, does this strengthen the chance John finally returns or is he booth for life?

Cowboys led by John vs. Skins led by Jay in 2015?

Jon Gruden has a much better & more stable job than a head coach right now (he's terrible at it though). I don't expect him to ever go back to coaching . I think he follows in the footsteps of Jimmy Johnson.

It would be interesting to see him coach the Cowboys, but if I were Jerry Jones I wouldn't want him. He's been out of football for too long IMO. And we've seen how colour commentators do in the NFL (Matt Millen).

Just how long does a coach stay out of coaching before he is no longer a viable candidate?

2 or 3 years.

I think they lose their edge. Jimmy Johnson did. Joe Gibbs did. Mike Ditka did. Mike Shanahan did. George Seifert did (although I don't know that he had much of one to begin with; he's one of the most overrated coaches of all time).

It's especially true if they go into broadcasting or work at a bed & breakfast IMO (Art Shell).

Dick Vermeil's the only one of whom I can think who came back after a long time & did extremely well. Bill Cower might still be a viable candidate because he's young & hasn't become that big of a media personality; plus he was a much better HC than Jon Gruden.

I might be talking out of both sides of my mouth here, but I definitely don't see working in broadcasting as a good thing if you're a coach. Maybe being around some of the biggest morons on planet earth rubs off on 'em.

I doubt it...reportedly making between $4 mil - $5 mil a yr...that's more than some NFL HCs now...and only slightly lower than guys like BB...the ONLY way I see Jon coming back is if something happened to his TV gig.
