No, that trade changed the direction of both teams. Had that trade not happened the Mariners had the dynasty not the Yankees. It wasn’t just Tino, it was Jeff Nelson then we got Russ Davis forcing out Mike Blowers.
All due respect to Tino, who was fantastic as a Yankee, even though he had impossibly large shoes to fill, I think the real "moment" that decided the short term futures for those clubs was when Gene Michael convinced Steinbrenner that Jeter was ready to be the starting SS, and talked him out of dealing a struggling Panamanian starter named Mariano Rivera for Felix Fermin.
