No, that trade changed the direction of both teams. Had that trade not happened the Mariners had the dynasty not the Yankees. It wasn’t just Tino, it was Jeff Nelson then we got Russ Davis forcing out Mike Blowers.

All due respect to Tino, who was fantastic as a Yankee, even though he had impossibly large shoes to fill, I think the real "moment" that decided the short term futures for those clubs was when Gene Michael convinced Steinbrenner that Jeter was ready to be the starting SS, and talked him out of dealing a struggling Panamanian starter named Mariano Rivera for Felix Fermin.

I don't know how much Yankee baseball you watched in 2018, but the Yanks were pretty dreadful defensively as well.

Why I like Paxton's K%. Less balls put into play the better.


Paxton's more a flyball pitcher, and the Yankee outfield defense overall is above average. We'll see how much effect the ballpark factor has on him (Yankee Stadium is shorter down the lines than Safeco, but deeper to the gaps and CF).
