and for all intents and purposes, he is about as healthy now as he has been in 3+ years

6 for his last 46 now, his last XBH hit June 24th

you can't make this stuff up, one of the worst contract extensions is the history of professional sports

Yea I agree BPNAZ. His defense remains decent but his offense is just shit and in this road series he has gone 3 for like 28 or something. So yea, your assessment is pretty spot on with this guy.

Bench Howard unless the Phils are playing COL (.455), SD (.375), STL (.313), or TEX (.303). So far in July, Ryan's a cool .100.

The announcers last night were talking about bringing Franco up and sitting Howard. They were concerned that if the Phillies did that and Franco ended up sitting more than playing that that would really lead to the beginning of destroying a young prospect's career just to watch a guy like Howard continue to flounder as a matter of his age and that Howard may have reached a nadir in the latter portions of this awful contract. In other words, don't call up Franco unless the Phillies intend on playing him in a significant manner sitting Howard and platooning him in a manner the Phillies have done with Rupp/Ruiz, Asche, and Rollins.

It's always sad when we see pro athletes start to decline as they age. I will never forget going to a Padres/Mets game during Willie Mays last season when he wrapped things up with the Mets. He came up to bat and fell down swinging at a pitch well out of the strike zone. I'll never forget how bad I felt for the guy.

I feel bad too... the man damned himself to hell the second he put on a gay Giants uniform.

Yesterday, Howard actually came out of his slump for a few minutes and he had a HR and 3 RBIs. So maybe Howard is waking up.

BPNAz, I stated he woke up for a few minutes. Looks like he fell back to sleep and the announcers today were dissecting Howard's swing identifying his consistent mental lapses that lead to bad technique. I suspect, unless he gets a handle on it, Howard will reman below .200 the rest of his career.

Does anyone remember when he would have become a free agent if Amaro had not extended his contract? Hypothetically, if he hadn't done that, would Howard even still be in the league right now? My guess is at this point he'd be like Mark Reynolds or Carlos Pena, struggling to get that 2-3 million a year from someone.

Howard has to work it out himself. All these suggestions about his stance, arm and hand positions are each a piece of the swing. He must be totally screwed up in the head after listening to everything.

That was one of the points of McCarthy and company is Howard has listened to alot of people. At this point he probably has too much information. Cedrique might be right though. Howard just may be past his prime and is just going to languish as he collects some serious bucks.

exactly, that is what is really remarkable about how fast HOward has declined. If he never gets that fat extension, he probably is a platoon type player like a Mark Reynolds on another team
