Don't let the talk about Fowler or Cooper being higher on the big board fool you.
Those were trade down options. Fowler would probably be a trade down option for Atlanta at 8(staying in front of the Giants). Cooper may have been a trade down option with Chicago at 7. I doubt we would have taken him. If Scot had to choose between Scherff, Cooper, or Fowler, I believe it would have been Scherff. All along. This is my opinion.

I'm not so sure I agree that his top 3 weren't as reported. But I do think need factored into those rankings despite what I was saying all along that he would not factor in need.

I heard a quote, not sure if it was Gruden or SM, but he said something to the effect that Scherff "was the best player for this team right now". That kind of hints at filling a need to me and I"m not convinced his top 3 would have been the same had he been drafting for another team.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't believe what Scotty has told us. He's a refreshing respite from that liar Cerrato, a point made very well in Steinberg's article regarding his candor with the press and public. I think if Fowler were there at #5, we would've traded down with Atlanta and got their second rounder.

I can see a case easily made that the prime target was for Scherff but at a lower draft spot with a shot at an added draft pick being the ideal scenario.

And this with the players ranked the way he said, so no inconsistency at all. If Fowler...trade down w/Atlanta. If Amari, trade down with the Bears possibly. If Leonard, same thing. But when the calls didn't come, and Amari and Fowler were gone, go with Scherff who was the one still highest on your board cuz you know you weren't getting him outside of the top 8. Gnats were going to be all over that one.

Yeah we all wanted a trade down, my ideal scenario was to trade back and still land Scherff. But if the phone didn't ring or the offers weren't good enough I can certainly understand why SM didn't want to fuck around so he made sure he got his guy.

That's pretty darn clear that Scotty and three other GMs didn't think Williams was worth all the hype. If the Jets passed on him, I'm wondering how far he would've fallen.
