Is it really Jay Gruden or is it cultural?

No problem

1. 1-9 That’s our record on “Monday Night Football” since 2013.

2. 2-14 That’s our record on “Monday Night Football” since 2008.

3. 4-19 That’s our record on “Monday Night Football” since 2001.

4. 5-22 That’s our record on “Monday Night Football” since 1998.

5. And for those who want to point at the QB as making a difference... 0-6 That’s Kirk Cousins’s record on “Monday Night Football.” The only quarterbacks to ever start 0-6 on MNF are Archie Manning, Joe Namath and...Kirk Cousins.

We've sucked for 20 plus years collectively... not just on Monday nights. Surprised we've gotten to play on Monday night as much as we have to be quite honest. The Browns in comparison since 1990 (when we started sucking) are 4-6 and haven't played since 2009. If only the nfl threw us a bone and stopped scheduling us also for the last ten years.

Damn, we are pitiful on nationally televised games. But to answer your question, it is both. Gruden has now been here 5 seasons. His teams have shown up unprepared and flat in most every single BIG game, where there was something on the line. That is squarely on his shoulders. I like Jay, I really do. Would love to have a beer with him, but I am seriously doubting his ability as a head coach.

I also thought that this was a good summation...(the author writes)

"Maybe it’s based on tougher opponents on those abnormal days. Maybe it’s based on the pressure of a national audience. Maybe it’s all total coincidence. But for 20 years now, Washington on Monday night have been the very worst the NFL has to offer."

The past 5 year prime time games is squarely on Jay Gruden. He is a good coordinator, he is not a good HC/motivator.

While I agree that Gruden has been at the helm for 5 years and must own his contribution to the historical mess, there's more to it than the last five years. This team on Monday night over the last 20 years redefines awful. I believe that there are intrinsic factors that cannot be overcome by replacing the head coach from time to time.

I know that it seems to be a long while ago, but remember Scott McCloughan? Players genuinely liked the guy, they played for him and respected his football acumen. Right now there's a cultural problem and part of that has Bruce Allen's handprints all over it.

Not to get off track, but.......

Scotty Mac may've had the respect of the players far as his football acumen goes, but that acumen just took another big hit far as I'm concerned. I'm sure most heard the comment made Mon night, don't know who said it, that Norman isn't the Skins best CB anymore, Quinton Dunbar is. Before the Saints game PFF had QD ranked as the 5th best CB in football.

Norman was Scotty Mac's crown jewel move. Norman's looking more cubic zirconia than polished gem these days. I'm on the verge of wondering if Norman is trying to play his way outta town at times.

......Scotty Mac wasn't the answer we were looking for. Is he better than Allen? I'll give him that, but whatever mojo he had before he got to DC didn't translate there with him.

Scotty Mac was okay but I never felt he attained the status that some did. I was not butt hurt when he left.

I was not in favor of paying Norman what they paid him either.

Scotty Mac never had a chance. Allen made it clear he had final say on all personnel moves. He was neutered from the start and then handicapped with Allen and the Little Prince hanging over his head. No wonder he drank.

Looking at those numbers its hard not to feel as if something, physical, spiritual, cultural, I dunno, plays into the Redskin playing on Monday night. I really don't wanna say this because it kinda takes em off the hook. But this issue extends well beyond Gruden or Smith. It falls perfectly in line with Snyder's curse-induced, triflin ass.

Scotty Mac had the resume to be admired.

He never had the opportunity to run things here to make a fair judgement on Scotty Mac.

His resume might be of the stuff to be admired. His actual work as GM of the Redskins not so much.

I was not in favor of paying Norman what they paid him either.

People want to paint him as some master talent evaluator which he wasnt.

But he valued picks and the draft, and understood team building and positional values at least somewhat.

So i think it's less that he was so great and more that our alternatives both before and after him are so incompetent.
