Kind of random but with the HOF inductions being yesterday and Alfie recently getting his 1000th point. I was just thinking about whether or not he's done enough to get into the HOF.

First of all, I don't think the guy gets enough credit for how good of a player he really is. He's almost like a silent assassin. Nobody ever talks about him being one of the best players in the league and no one ever really has. Yet, he's quietly put up tons of points over the years while also playing a large portion of his career during the dead puck era. I don't have the stats but I'd say he has to be at least top 5 if not top 3 in points the last decade.

When he retires in a 2 or 3 years he'll probably have around 420-450 goals and 1150-1200 points. On top of that he'll have an Olympic gold medal and Calder Trophy. His playoff stats aren't that bad either with 45 goals and 88 points in 107 playoff games.

So has he done enough? Or will he just miss out?

One thing is certain. His number 11 will one day be retired in Ottawa.

P.S. Forty will love this thread...lol

It could be a long wait for Alfie, Urkie, the Hall seems to be definitely toughening up the requirements for induction (not that that's a bad thing). He's had a very good career and the Olympic Gold medal should definitely carry some weight. Whether it will be enough is tough to say. Honestly, I'm leaning towards no (just on the cusp, but not quite making it).

Oates (341 g, 1,420 pts) is still on the outside right? But Neely (395 g, 694 pts) is in.
it's so hard to tell nowadays.
using those comparisons, I'd lean no. Alfie reminds me more of Oates.... very very solid over a very very long time, though not often spectacular.
I'm sure other examples could be used to make a stronger case for a yes vote
here's one - Bernie Federko 369 g, 1,130 pts. always solid, rarely spectacular. He's in.

fwiw, I think 43 has always appreciated Aflie as a player, just not as a captain.

Yeah, obviously I hope he gets in but it is getting harder to get in now. At the same time, it may depend on who the other players eligible to get into the HOF are at that time. Or he could have to wait a long time as you mentioned.

I also think that the dead puck era needs to be factored into the equation for players that played during that era. From 1995 to 2004 points weren't easy to come by.

I say yes. For what Alfie's had to work with over his career, and the production he has created... sometimes in spite of what surrounds him, he has a legitimate gripe for the HOF. As others have pointed out, Alfie is going to have a tough go at getting in.

The one thing Alfie really has going for him is the Olympic gold and how big of a role he played in getting it. There's that, his Calder Trophy and the way he carried the team to the finals. And as I mentioned before, he played over half of his career during the dead puck era.

At the same time. There are examples like Adam Oates who are still not in the HOF. So it is very tough to say.

Puck was talking about Trevor Linden getting in mostly on the basis of being the face of a franchise. At the time I thought that he must be sipping on Grandpa's cough syrup, but there is a point to that. Daniel Alfredsson is the Ottawa Senators (well, him and Alexei Yashin :D), and that should have some weight for the voters. He's also got an All Star Team under his belt, 1,000+ points, and a couple of damn fine playoff years.

I wouldn't vote for him, but I'm a tight ass about the Hall. No also to Housley, Nieuwendyk, and I'm on the bubble with Sundin. Wasn't crazy about Ciccarelli getting in, either. Somehow I'm perfectly fine with Neely, tho.

lol. yeah, I fully admit I had the homer juice flowing in that Linden discussion (and Bure for that matter).
Linden especially, just doesn't have the numbers or awards.

I think the rule is that 14 of 18 voters must say yes. With the inconsistencies of who has and hasn't made it in, it's just so tough to figure out what the hell they could be basing it off of.
Neely, as much as I loved him as a player (I have a jersey with his name on it around here somewhere) is the weak link in the hall as far as I am concerned - along with Federko.

Alfie and Sundin imho get the same answer... whatever that answer is.

He is very bubble right now.If he keeps up his current level of play for another 2 years, I think he'll get to the point where's likely to get in (60-40).

People seem to to talk like Recchi is a sure fire HOFer; to me him and Alfredsson have similar career trajectories.

It's tough to know these days. '

One thing I do know is that Lindros shouldn't get in without a ticket.

Yeah. So much "would have been" with Neely. He's my childhood hero (if I ever have a son, he will be named Cam) so I have to think of arguments for him. There's the "would have" argument and the power forward thing. To this day when many people think power forward, they think Neely. May be the perfect example of that kind of player (the term wasn't invented during Howe's days). But the truth is he was out in the middle of his prime.

OT - Last year when the Bruins had the infamous rematch with the Pens after Cooke laid out Marc Savard, I had to watch the game on a Pittsburgh feed. There was extra security and the hockey media really jumped all over it. During intermission, the Pens chose that game to do a tribute to one of their former players - Ulf Samuelsson. My jaw was on the fucking floor. For shame, Pittsburgh. For shame.

Well, I think Sundin will get in, so by that logic...

Sundin will probably get in because of his Toronto connections. Is that fair? Probably not but it's a fact.

Alfredsson might not because no one ever talks about the guy and it's unfair but a lot of HOF'ers get in just because of the way they are perceived and talked about by the media.

Alfie has never been a guy who has wanted all the media attention. He just goes about his business, plays well at both ends of the ice and gets a point every game. He's done it for 14 seasons and he's done it rather unspectacularly. He's one of those guys that you don't realize how good they are until you start looking at his numbers and say, "How did that happen?"
