Yea ok, cause when he signed everyone was quite impressed at how low he signed for. and made a stink how he signed low for SJ then was shipped. Its was a great deal at the time, and still is.

That was the $1.8m one year contract he signed previous to this one. This contract most called market value if not a bit of an overpay based on age and expected improvement. A lot of people said it could be a bargain if he could get back to 30g, 60pt.

Right now it's not looking like a great deal. $3.0m for a scoring line forward who, for the last three years, has shown well below average scoring ability, is completely one dimentional, and doesn't preform particularly well in any other aspect of the game including being a disaster in his own zone is not good value.

Contenders arent the only teams wanting his services, young teams with caps space that would really appreciate a speedy forward who can score. They arent used to the playoffs, so his PO disappointments wouldnt really bother them, as making the playoffs is fine with them. I mentioned Edmonton already in another thread, who I think he'd fit in great with, with their young speedsters. Florida is another one. Tallon has plenty of cap room Those teams wouldnt require a salary takeback from SJ. Montreal & Toronto need to get something going to get into the playoffs, but im not sure bout their cap space.

The sharks have depth area problems in the top heavy dept are cause they never have any talented prospects to insert into the lineup because they trade them all away (besides Logan). Same with all their first rd picks. And usually the guys they trade those 1st rnders & prospects for are deadline deal rentals that they dont even keep. Some are good trades like Campbell & White. Campbell he tried resigning. Some are just retarded deals like Moore, Winnik & TJ. I mean look what they gave up for 3 guys who prob wont be on the roster next year (thankfully)

Agreed on the bolded. All trade deadline deals by contenders are "mortgage the future for mercenary help" type deals. Doug is guilty of that every year. It's all part of the win now mode. We love it when he scores the highly coveted mercenary (Guerin, Campbell, Moen, etc.), then when the Sharks bow out of the playoffs we hate the future that was mortgaged when those deals were made. You give to get.

I think we are straying from the topic we started with. Which is why isn't Doug signing top UFAs? You think he should overpay to sign UFAs because overpaying is still better than giving up assets in a trade (filling a hole while creating another hole). I think he doesn't and shouldn't sign top UFAs because top UFAs sign ridiculous contracts. And on top of that, they always go East. My hypothesis is that to lure them West, Doug would have to pay even more. Something I am glad he has not done.

His way of getting top end talent is via trade. So far, his trades for high end talent have worked out well imo. Thornton, Heatley, Boyle, Havlat - all deals on paper that favored the Sharks. Please note that I, along with many, hated the Heatley acquisition because we thought the Sharks didn't need another headcase on the team as well as his lack of athleticism. But on paper Michalek + Cheechoo for Heatley was great value, at that time.

I think the UFA market is good for supplementing a roster with missing complimentary pieces, not building with top UFAs. Signing #1 centers (Gomez, BRichards) or franchise wingers (Kovalchuk, Gaborik) is playing with cap hell. Again, there are guys you break the bank for that made it to UFA status such as Chara and Niedermeier. I don't feel like Suter and Parise are in the same class.

Wilson has shown in the past that he's willing to make competitive, but not bank busting, offers to high end UFA dmen like he did Chara, Nieds, and Campbell and I expect that he'll do the same with Suter. Wilson does have a couple things going for him with Suter that he didn't with those others and that's the relationship between Suter and Pavelski as well as Uncle Gary pushing him towards San Jose. If it comes down to just a bidding war the Sharks will loose every time but I'm not sure it's going to come down to that with Suter.
