Couple of things
1. I like the mentality of building through the draft. Thats how its done for the most part. The Broncos were the exception last year of course.
2. I like showing restraint and not signing anyone and everyone.
That being said, this has been one of the busiest first days of free agency I have ever seen. I am concerned that we might have missed the boat on some younger, talented and healthy free agents. I was all for avoiding the first tier of free agents that would demand top dollar. I was hoping for a simple approach in signing younger, tier 3 guys.
Well, it doesn't appear that anyone is really left that fits the younger, healthy, talented description. Some of the players I thought we would have targeted (Ian Williams, Jaye Howard, Jeremy Lane, Ben Jones) are all gone. I'm very glad we stayed clear of Marvin Jones, Oliver Vernon and Malik Jackson and others that would command top dollar.
I am just confused to our approach and I think the Front Office might be surprised at the speed of players flying off the board. The sky isn't falling, but I hope the Front Office doesn't think we are better than we really are. We have gapping holes in the secondary and DLine. The draft cannot fix every hole we have. I hope we don't bring in over-the-hill players like Chris Long because we are out of options. I think we will be fine but I am surprised we didn't come away with 2 or so quality, cost efficient free agents today.
