Over the last 4 years we have carried on average right around $13.25M in dead cap money from guys brought in and then cut loose.

Another $14M a year on average to players on IR.

Combined thats $27.25 million per year on average for players that either didnt help or got released.

Combined thats $109M in cap space basically wasted over the last 4 seasons.

Bottom line we need to get better at picking Free Agents, and getting guys who can stay healthy. Because we are bleeding 1/5th of the cap every year on guys who helped little or not at all.

That would go with my philosophy then. Only get young guys with little risk.

You mean like Doctson who was basically $1.75M in dead money??

some of it "carries over" apparently

but this trend shows the organization has swung to the polar opposite of the spectrum from Dans early days of signing Bruce Smith & Deion "Prime Time" Sanders etc.

OH I realize we have positive carry over from money we didnt spend against the cap. My point was money we did spend and got little or no production from. AKA wasted cap spending.

And injury from a young guy? Seriously dude?

You might want to double check and see how much money we spent on INJURED young guys over the past four seasons. Add to it, how many guys have we drafted with serious injury histories or just a history of bad injury luck??

BUt my real point I guess would go towards the free agents we have brought in and then released at a high price.. and over the past few season tese werent guys considered old or past their prime.

Reyes, Peya, Culliver.... guys that cost a good bit of change and produced very little for use.

Seriously though. You have a point.

Far as the injuries go. Dotson, Cravens has had a couple concussions hasn't he? Not as many as Jordan Reed though. Martell Spraight(sp) is another one. Matt Jones. Chris Thompson has missed time due to injury, Josh LiBerius, Robert Griffin, Niles Paul. How many years did we fuck off on Jarvis Jenkins? Too many is the only correct answer. UCLA's Terrence Austin, Brian Orakpo, what became of Marko Mitchell? Malcolm Kelly, Colt Brennan injured both his hips didn't he?

And the Skins got lucky with Culliver as he pretty much fucked off his big money guarantee being a knucklehead.

Valid pts but some of this depends on the situation. Some of the guys you mention were late round picks. These are generally guys who either are not very talented or have issues - attitude, size, speed, off field issues & yes injury histories. You are often able to select them late for this reason & you are rolling the dice. The Cowboys took Smith in the 2nd rd last season knowing that he would miss the entire season - they were thinking long term and gambling. Ditto for many other teams.

In terms of Cravens & concussions - I would guess that the majority of NFL players have had multiple concussions even before taking their first NFL snap. Unless the guy had a ton of these I don't think that this precludes you from drafting a guy like this.

Bottom line for this team is to keep as many picks as possible & learn from your previous mistakes in drafting. They will make more mistakes in the future - the key will be in hitting on a decent number & building a young core of talent. Everyone in the organization knows that they are being watched carefully so time to obtain some more quality picks & FAs - time will tell.

I have been very critical of SM's free agent signings and for good reason. But it was more for the lack of production and the fact that they left the same gaping holes. I'd be curious to see where our dead cape figure stacks up against the rest of the league.

Thanks. So much for SM's "cheap, low risk signings". They were bad signings regardless of value and collectively were expensive and costly as the positions still need to be filled.

Sure, sure, sure far as some being late round pks and situation dependent. Colt Brennan, who was a 7th rd pk I believe, is a good example of that. The best thing he had going for him imo far as the NFL went was he had a cool ass name. But I remember watching him/Hawaii against Georgia in whatever bowl they played each other in Colt's sr year and I thought then. He wasn't long for the NFL due to the problems he had dealing with the physicality of the Bulldogs defense.

And now that I think about it. Cravens I don't believe had any concussions issues coming out of college. So he shouldn't be listed...my bad.

Still, it seems a decent amount of current players that were no doubt drafted to be depended on to contribute, Dotson, Reed, Thompson, Jones, had questions or issues relating to some type of injury concerns.
