I'd imagine you can generate more velocity with longer limbs too.

If you can throw 98 mph but you have no other pitches, and your off-speed pitches are worthless, then you're not going to make it.

You may be lights out for a season or 2, but eventually hitters will catch up to that fastball.

Agreed. The elite velocity pitchers have a larger margin of error with their fastball than someone who maxes out in the low 90's, but big league hitters can and will still catch up with it. The changing of speed and locating the fastball is where they really make their money.

Yea velocity isn't as much of an issue as control and movement. That's the entire reason why Maddux was effective for so long. He put it exactly where he wanted to and didn't need a 90 mph fastball to do it.
