The raptors have agreed with Landry Fields on a 3 year offer sheet worth $20 million.

Without looking at his stats, I want you guys to guess what Fields' FT% was last season, keep in mind he is a SHOOTING guard.

apparently by doing this, it blows up the Knick's chances of getting Nash in a sign and trade. So that's the real reason we're wasting the rest of our cap space to increase our chances a bit of getting Nash.

I don't know how I feel about this

To support what Fro's talking about, here's an article on it.

Raptors Sign Landry Fields Solely To Cockblock The Knicks On Steve Nash
Barry Petchesky
Marc Stein reports that the Raptors have agreed to terms with Knicks RFA guard Landry Fields, at three years for around $20 million. That's exactly the sort of backloaded, poison pill deal we wrote about yesterday—the Knicks have the right to match the offer, but probably not the financial wherewithal. So the Raptors take advantage of a CBA loophole to overpay a not-very-good player. Why? Steve Nash.

Both the Knicks and Raptors are in on Nash, with Toronto being able to offer superior money, and the Knicks only a midlevel exception worth $5 million or so. But there was hope in New York's front office that they could work out a sign-and-trade with Phoenix, where Nash could get paid closer to what he deserves in exchange for some flotsam and expiring deals. The most valuable piece in any potential trade the Knicks could offer would have been Landry Fields.

Fields is serviceable, but not for $20 million over three. But if that's what it takes to muscle the Knicks, Toronto's only real competition, out of the Steve Nash sweepstakes, then it's a brilliant move. The Raps have the cap space to overpay Fields if it guarantees them Nash, so the move is worthwhile, underhanded, and completely within the rules. Bryan Colangelo is an evil genius.

I'm torn. Now, while Fields is a natural 2-guard, he often played the 3 spot for the Knicks (especially before Carmelo arrived)...so maybe this has been the elusive SF that Salesmans has been waiting for?

Fields is tough, defensive-minded, does all the little things but is not great offensively.

Having said that...really?

I dont see anything wrong with Fields. Hes not great but hes certainly better than most of the guys the Raptors have running around wearing their uniform right now.

Plus if Fields reverts back to his 2010-2011 form then the Raptors get a really nice piece. He definitely had a sophomore slump last year but thats not unexpected being a young guy on team going through so much turnover.

Without looking at his stats, I want you guys to guess what Fields' FT% was last season, keep in mind he is a SHOOTING guard.

Well he has a 48% FG percentage for his career. I don't see him as a guy on the team that I want to ever have the ball long enough to get foul shots. Maybe 1 or 2 per game.

His 3FG% last year was pretty bad, but it was above 35% his rookie season and he was good through college, so we can assume it was just a bad year.

So we have a bench player, 3rd or 4th guy off the bench as a respectable shooter, above average defense, and not to mention he's going into only his third season.

I like the signing. Take your damn FT% numbers outta here.

To be fair to him, the Knicks were a mess last season trying to find an identity. With Melo, Amare being in and out and then the emergence of Linsanity, Fields really fell out of the rotation and that really didn't help his game.

To give you guys some more context on how Fields might work in tdot:

Rapid Reax: Fields' verbal deal with Toronto
By Jared Zwerling

Fields is mostly an intangibles player who thrives more than others off the ball, in transition and when ball movement is stressed. The Raptors play at a faster halfcourt pace with DeMar DeRozan on the wing and Andrea Bargnani scoring off high pick-and-rolls. They also just added elite athlete Terrence Ross in the draft. If they land Steve Nash, Fields should thrive in that system more so than in New York, where he can still be valuable, but the Knicks' offense would have to become better team-oriented for him to make his mark again.

But for 5 million/5.2 million/9.8 million? That 3rd year is going to hurt. On this team, Fields would either be the 4th or 5th option on offense.

the way the deal works for the raptors, is his salary gets averaged out over those seasons. so he'll be a 6.66 cap hit every season of his deal with us.

BUT if the knicks sign him, his cap hit is whatever hes paid each season. so theyd have a cap hit of 9.8 mill his last year, which probably puts them in the luxury tax

ya last year's knicks team wasnt a good fit for fields. he's not going to be good playing with two iso players. but in a ball movement offence headed by nash (or godforbid calderon) he'll be better.

if we get nash, its an ok deal. if we dont, this will be the last signing colangelo ever makes for an nba team.

what really scares me, is he shot 56% from the free throw line last season. that tells me two things.

1) he cant be that great a shooter
2) he clearly has a give up button, and it must of been engaged for the duration of last season

on the plus side, we can now roll out a legit white wash of

PG Nash (or calderon)
SG Fields
SF Kleiza
PF Bargnani
C Vajayjay

best white wash since calderon/parker/garbajosa/bargnani/nesterovic

I think you hit the nail on the head, Fro. This is an 'ok' deal at best. I know Casey's high on this guy and he would fit into Casey's system (him and Vaj would be rebounders + getting second chance opportunities/points).

I think I'd be more hyped on this deal if two things... 1) We didn't have a guy named Roseanne who also can't shoot from the outside and needs to drive to the basket in order to get points. That means, besides Nash, our 2 and 3 aren't reliable from the outside. 2) If Fields was clearly an upgrade from the team we currently have...I'm not convinced he's THAT big of an upgrade if an upgrade at all.

Ive always like Fields. He is young as well and didnt really get alot of touches last season with Melo and the rest.

He is a good depth guy. Yes the final year is alot of money but it will also be a expiring contract for another team if the Raps decide to part ways
