Coughlin is definitly a great coach, however had he been the Bengals head coach, I'm not so sure he would have done any better than Lewis.
Coughlin is 4-4 against AFC north teams, hardly enough games to make a definate judgement, but 1 win was against the Browns and the other an overtime win against us in 2008. He could have easily been 2-6 against the AFC North.
Lewis has become the Bengals all-time winning coach in the same time period.
Given the talent Lewis has had, could Coughlin have accomplished more as a Bengals head coach when he could only muster 4-4 against the AFC north with the abundant talent he has had in NY?
Just a thought, and not in any way knocking Coughlin, who has obviously accomplished more than Marvin Lewis overall. BUT, with all the talk of "we should have got Coughlin" I just don't know if he would have gotten any farther than Marvin Lewis has in Cincy.
Another factor is we would have different players had Coughlin been our head coach, so there is no way to know what Coughlin could have accomplished in Cincy, which is basically my whole point.
There is no way to know what the outcome would have been, so people shouldn't bash us for not signing Coughlin. All we have to go by is his 4-4 record against the AFC North.
