It's a tough situation. While the team is still responsible to pay him, it just seems wrong that they get off with out having to worry about his cap hit while he withers away for years in the minors. I guess I just hate that GMs aren't held responsible for the dangerous and stupid contracts they hand out like candy. Obviously there are certain situations which don't necessarily apply when it comes to waiving a player, but in all honesty this is just as much cap circumvention as the lengthy front-loaded deals.

Agreed. I believe that you should be able to demote a player to the minors to clear cap space, there should be some form of a penalty to pay. If a player is not playing good, then you should be able to shift him, but yes, you are responsible for the signing, so there should be something set in place for that. Not sure what, but...

We lost a season of hockey we were told to level the playing field, and in some ways that has happened, but there's no way a Nashville or Phoenix could handle burying a contract like Redden's in the minors. As Campbell mentioned, Jeff Finger will be earning $7 million over the next two seasons playing in Toronto, but for the Marlies, not the Maple Leafs. Toronto, New York Rangers, Philly, Montreal, and Detroit can absorb mistakes like Redden and Finger, other teams would have significantly more difficulty.

Exactly...and that of course leads to those franchises being more hesitant to signing these players to big contracts (there's always unknown), which puts them behind in attempting to sign big names. They already have it hard enough in trying to draw players to their cities, this just doesn't help their cause. I mean...Nashville has been a good team for awhile, and for the most part that's been without a star player. If they had more stable money flow and could go out on a limb a little more, maybe they could draw more interest. It's a large disadvantage. The thing that bothers me most about it is the lack of accountability.

I dont really see a problem with this whole redden situation ... Redden will continue to be paid (if he reports to Hartford) and the Rags now have cap room

for some reason I find the Joel Perrault/Canucks situation a little more questionable. The dollars involved are minor in comparison. $500,000 on a one way contract. The Canucks already have an agreement with the owners of the Manitoba Moose to not only ensure this player a roster spot but also Moose ownership will pay his salary in full. ok maybe the moose ownership want him that bad but it just seems like the Canucks are getting away with their mistake in totality

Not sure if the players like this much more than the owners.

I guess I wonder about a league that penalizes a team quite severely for violating "the spirit of the CBA" while at the same time allows teams to literally walk away from mistakes because they happen to be quite flush with cash.

The Sharks did this with Kyle McLaren a couple years back that I thought seemed a little bit off. Don't get me wrong, I was happy with the effect it had on the "on ice" product as Kyle had slowed down way too much.....that said, I thought it was a little fishy (npi).

Some teams are able to absorb the contract. That's the way it is. What kind of penalty should teams who make these mistakes be given is the question the new CBA could answer??

That's a good idea. I wonder if the league would want to make it so that the team would forfeit the same draft picks they would if said team were to sign an RFA (using same $ increments).

If it's a multi-year contract (ala Redden) that a team is trying to bury, they can pick which year they'd like to forfeit the picks. However, the picks have to be lost in one of the years left on the players contract.

I remember there was some speculation that Toronto was confused and signed a different player than the one they wanted.

I think the AHL should have a similar cap, to aviod these situations. It is a kick in the nuts that some AHL teams may have almost as much salary as the lower level NHL teams.
