If you're thinking that Chris Chester is getting cut, think again.

Per John Keim today (via ESPN 980), Gruden thinks Chris Chester is the answer at right guard. He also likes what he sees in Spencer Long, but wants him to come into camp in shape.

Unless someone like Scotty steps in or Gruden has a change of heart, Chester is our starting RG this year. This also potentially impacts our draft if we keep our #5 pick. If we do and take Scherff, he's playing RT, something he may not be ready to do. If Scotty is of that opinion, we'll probably be taking an OLB like Dante Fowler if we stay at 5.

Of course, the best option is to trade down and pick up a tackle like Andrus Peat. Whatever the case may be, though, right guard isn't too high on our shopping list this year.

God help us.

If this is true, then Gruden is simply going out Kamikaze style. Perhaps he didn't realize how much money RGIII generates, and that winning can wait for Synder when you are a Top 3 NFL team business wise.
The next coach should be fine because Gruden and Robert could both likely be gone if this fails.

You and me both. Maybe some of us should chip in to buy Gruden that All 22 feature the NFL Network puts out. That way, he can actually watch tape of Chester playing last season.

Last time I checked McCloughan was in charge of personnel. He has final say over the roster, not Gruden.

If Chester stays then Jay isn't the only one making the call.

That's true. But if the coach takes a strong position on someone, that will often prevail. That's not always true, and I'm not sure if it'll be true here, however, this isn't a good sign for a coach that's already under fire.

We can only hope that someone comes to his senses regarding the RG position.

Jay can take any position he wants but Scot is making the call. I'm sure he will take into consideration what Gruden wants but this is why coach and GM are separated. Sometimes a coach has to be saved from themselves, to paraphrase Bobby Beathard.

Or one of the reasons may be things are not going to be fixed in one draft. Or one year for that matter.

That said, ugh to not finding a better solution to Chester next year :puke:

I was thinking of Beathard during this discussion and his memorable clashes with Gibbs over player personnel decisions. McCloughan does have final say, and that's something I noted in my post. The issue, however, is if he does have that power, why hasn't he exercised it to dump Chester and/or look for other help at that position? Maybe he'll take someone in the draft and is hanging onto Chester just in case. But, as of right now, the lack of movement on both McCloughan and Gruden's parts indicates an acceptance of the "talent" we've got at the RG position. And that is troubling. In Scott we trust, right?

I wonder if Bill Callahan has told people he has enough on the roster to fix this. I think at some point they do bring in a right tackle through the draft or some cap cut late in camp. I did hear that today. Chester has been so bad in pass pro the last couple of years.

Or maybe theres just no one out there who is a viable replacement? Chesters not the best but he has experience in the leauge and knows the offense. Like CaliSkins said the team won't be fixed in one offseason.

I was hoping to get a RG fix through FA. I watched guard after guard go. Then, the music stopped. I hope the folks at Ashburn know what the hell they're doing. Between Callahan and McCloughan, I can trust both. Gruden, not so much. But, based on what I saw last year, keeping Chester is a Chippy-like move.

I feel you on the trusting MC and Callahan part. Maybe they see something we dont? Bad coaching last year which Callahan thinks he can fix, perhaps? Heres hoping they have someone in mind in the draft.

Right now, that's all we can fall back on. McCloughan and Co. can reward our faith in them or destroy it. If history is any guide, it's the latter. But McCloughan ushers in a new era. Hopefully.
