Not really. Ricky might retire & the Isles have at least 11 million coming off the books next year. If Kovalchuk can help Wang get his Lighthouse Project approved it will be well worth it.

Sorry, but Kovalchuk isn't going to spend the prime of his career on the Isles who have no goalies (unless you're actually going to argue that DP won't be on the IR lol) or defense. The dude has seen the playoffs twice in his career and has only experienced one win (swept by the Rags with ATL and out in 5 with the devs last year). Signing with the Isles just ensures a few more years of no playoffs.

Reportedly, the Isles attempted to overpay for Martin and Hamhuis, and both turned them down.

Think about it, Kovy turned down 100+ mill with Atlanta because he wanted to win, but he's going to accept the Isles offer when they're in a worse state than the Thrash? Not likely.

He overplayed his hand. He could be a Devil or King right now but he's holding out for more money. Sure, he can get more money, but then that whole "I want to win" thing comes into the equation. It's damn near impossible to get the long-term deal he wants with a team that can win next season. He's going to have to pick one.

I would like to agree with you but money talks and Kovy walks:(

I'm not concerned about him landing on the Island. He could average two goals a game and it wouldn't save the Islanders. They are terrible. When I first heard the Islanders had won four cups in the 80s (yeah, I'm a young'un), I literally could not connect that team to the current one. I thought, "gee, I wonder where that team plays now and what they are called."

I don't think Kovy wants to go to NY. If he wanted to be there and if they offered him 10 mil a year he would have already signed. I think the Kings and Devils have offered him about 8 mil and he is trying to use the Ilse to raise the price. If the Kings sign him at 10 mil he may get booed in his first game. Of course once he scores his first goal all we be forgiven.

He has to stop being LeBron and just sign somewhere. I am getting sick of always needing to be sitting by a computer alllll weekend. It is not fair.

Watch him sign with the sabres just because he feels sorry for us....

seriously though, with him on an islander team, they become serious contenders for like the next 5 years.

The Islanders have a ton of potential with Tavares, Moulson, Okposo, Niederreiter, Bailey, and Kabanov. Throw in Kovalchuk and suddenly those free agent defenseman that said "no thanks" to the Islanders this year, will be more willing to sign in upcoming years. I'm not saying he'll go there, but the Islanders might not be a joke for much longer -- with or without Kovy.

That could be true. However even if Kovalchuk doesn't sign with the Islanders at least the Kings or NJ will have to spend more than they want in order to get him. I think at the very least Wang started a bidding war.

this would not make the islanders a contender. they might get into the playoffs. how are they going to go from 13th in the east to 1st? or even 8th. kovalchuk is good although nobody is that good.
