I am trying to come up with any scenario that makes sense. It almost looks like his hands grabbed and messed him up, but he slid just fine. He came close to getting his bell rung on the base.

I think he was a lot closer to the base than he thought, so he didn't actually need to go in head first, but he didn't realize it until he was already committed.

yeah I think he slid late, tried to just slide in on his hands and they buckled.

when you see the whole play, it looked like for whatever reason his foot was caught right before the gif shows, and he basically just fell, that's why his hands went down so hard, followed by his head...

Agreed, pretty funny
