I would trade for Jonathan Stewart

Panthers already have 4 running backs (Newton, Williams, Tolbert, Stewart).

Newton, Williams, and Tolbert and signed long term, Jonathan Stewart is only 25, he has light mileage on him, and he's a proven NFL back that given the chance can carry the load.

I would trade for him, and ease him in to Gore's role as Gore starts to fade.

Look at his stats:

Year Team GP GS Rushing Receiving Fumbles
Att Yds Avg Lng TD Rec Yds Avg Lng TD Fum Lost
2008 CAR 16 0 184 836 4.5 41 10 8 47 5.9 15 0 2 1
2009 CAR 16 3 221 1,133 5.1 67 10 18 139 7.7 19 1 3 2
2010 CAR 14 7 178 770 4.3 48 2 8 103 12.9 55 1 4 4
2011 CAR 16 3 142 761 5.4 32 4 47 413 8.8 26 1 1 0
Total 62 13 725 3,500 4.8 67 26 81 702 8.7 55 3 10 7

We ALL would trade for him. However, trading takes two parties for it to work. It involves a two way street - which means that it is easier said than done. On that note, it all depends to what you are willing to give up for him and most importantly would Carolina be content with your offer. So let me as you, what would you offer?

a 7th, a 6th, a 5th...4th? A 3rd, or a 2nd, or even a 1st? How much are you willing to give to acquire this "special player".

I don't see the Panthers letting Stewie go for anything less than a second or third rounder...

He'll be a great, productive player for about 5-6 more years though

The only way I would trade for Stewart is if I knew he signed a new contract with the Niners. If he did then I would give up a 3rd rounder for him. Nothing higher.

Think he goes to the Steelers tho. They are in desperate need of an RB. Hell maybe the Broncos could go after him too.

I would give up a 3rd, and he would have to sign a new deal that was backloaded so when Gore phases out, Stewar can phase in.

No more than a 4th. Maybe our 3rd rounder this year.

His contract has one year left and I'm not willing to pay him what it would take for a new one plus give up picks. All we gotta do is draft a RB that is better than Dixon and we are set.

Transitioning from Gore to Jonathan Stewart, there would be no drop off.

You'd have to get lucky to draft a RB like Stewart in the 3rd or later round. There's a good reason he was drafted 13th overall.

Also if you pay Stewart the $$$, then you have to ask Gore to take a haircut. When Gore drops off, he won't be worth what he's getting now.

I instantly thought of this when they signed Tolbert, problem is what others have stated. Not sure if it's worth the price to trade AND sign him. Doesn't hurt to kick the tires, though.

Bernard Pierce is comparable to Jonathan Stewart in the running game. So I'd take a risk on Pierce (the younger, cheaper, unproven) if he isn't already gone by that point.

I agree. He's going to demand a high salary and i am of the firm belief of drafting them in the 2nd-7th round while getting a good deal for them for that 4-5 year period. RB is the easiest position to fill. Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson may be the exception to the rule.

would LOVE for J-Stew to end up in San Fran!!

Would be great for him to get a SB ring.

I doubt it happens. A guy like LaMichael James or Kenjon Barner next year is more likely to be a 49er than Stewart.

awesome if the Niners drafted LMJ this draft. HOw bad NIners need a RB? Could LMJ be a 2nd rounder for the Niners?
