The 49ers threw to their running backs only 189 times in the last three years, the fewest by any team.

pure speculation on my part but could it be because their qb isnt polished in the pocket either ?

i wonder what Rg3's numbers are as farr as dumping it off to our backs ?

would be interesting to track that stat

This has been my theory and expectation all along.....a lot more dependence on the run, pitch, screen and swing passes. This allows our QB to become much more comfortable because the greater success there is here the more open the field becomes. That same success puts the offense in more manageable 3rd and short situations, again putting our novice QB in situations where a quick throw garners a first down. So much depends on J. Gruden learning to rely on his backs and TE's as his QB learns.

well these are the steps our team can take to give us a chance to win with Rg3 until he becomes better in the pocket and reading and knowing what defenses are doing to him

build the foundation first then move on from there and this is what i feel SM is doing that way if RG3 fails you have parts around the next young rookie qb already in place

Exactly!!!.........My great concern is that moves like this may very well be coming 3 years too late in order to maximize the return on that huge investment paid to get Griffin. Imagine all of this being done or at least being started in 2012!! Yeah I know, but damn that aberration, it actually set this team back.

well stymie , shanny was under pressure to win . they had to start him because of the price and where he was drafted . however he was mishandled as far as his injury was concerned and it continued as they coddled him and some of it was on him .

but that is water under the bridge now . what is important here and now is doing what you can do now to fix the issue . and if it means back to the basics and building around the guy then that is the only course of action if you are to salvage anything .

however gruden is under public pressure to win , so it will take some great coaching to guide this situation through this period and win enough games to merit another year

my standard is 1st year you evaluate what you have . year 2 you acquire the parts you need and year 3 you start to make your run. so firing after year 2 is unfair (but likely )

I'm not sure I understand the connection in your opening post Dad. If SF was concerned about their QB, which they should be by the way, wouldn't they make it easier on him by calling a lot of safe, easy passes to RBs? As for Griff last year that was the entire game plan by the end of the year, short quick throws due to the QBs limitations.

hitting your RBs a lot of times has to do with going through your reads and finding the safety valve / sure screen are called plays but a lot is just going through your progressions hence the issue with both qbs
