... and I've come to the conclusion that his logic just falls apart under even the slightest of examination. The indignation in his response also just bothers me.
Let's start with "Why didn't you try to run the ball?"
Nagy's response (in a nutshell): "In that situation they know you're running. You're only going to risk losing 3-4 yards."
That just seems to be such a ludicrous notion. Teams trailing by one score also know the opposition is running late in the game with clock around two minutes when they're burning time outs. How often do we see the opposition move the chains and end the game? Multiple times per week.
The Chargers were rotating three UDFA's at DT. They've been gashed by the run all season. They were gashed by the run vs the Bears. They had been on the field for 38 minutes vs the Bears. How could you possibly be so sure that you can't pickup 5-10 yards on a couple of run plays? Isn't Nagy supposed to be "imaginative" too? You can't think of anything that might catch them off balance a bit? Something with the QB? Hell, how about your lover boy Patterson? Nothing?
Anyway, then he's asked "How about throwing the ball?"
Nagy's response: *Looks at reporter like he's speaking to him in Spanish* What if we get a sack what if we fumble?
Adds (which I think is important) I thought we were in field goal range before the (Trubisky) scramble
So, let's start with the obvious cognitive dissonance here. Nagy is saying he believed that the team was in-range for Piniero to win the game PRIOR to Trubisky's scramble. Where he then HAD TRUBISKY DROP BACK TO PASS.
Then he's asked why not throw the ball and his answer boils down to "We were in field goal range. Why risk throwing?"
Well, Matt... in your own words "We were in field goal range before the scramble". So, why did you have Mitch drop back then? What happens if you get a sack or a fumble? Why wouldn't you have the same concern?
Clearly, you do understand the idea of cutting a 51 yard kick down to a 41 yard kick. Yet, you can't FATHOM the idea of making a 41 yard kick a 31 yard attempt?
Second, to answer that question of "what happens if you get a sack or a fumble?" I would like to have said to him "The same thing that happened when you settled for a 41 yard field goal on a windy day at Soldier Field. You LOSE the game."
Also, this goes back to "we were already in range". If you were already in range 11 yards back before Trubisky's scramble. Why aren't you in range after a sack? Which usually nets a loss of 5-8 yards.
I mean, so long as we're only painting worst case scenarios; how about factoring the one that... ya know... actually fucking happened to you? THE MISSED FIELD GOAL. Yet, you're going to act righteously indignant over imaginary ones?
THIRD, this dude comes back on the podium today and doubles down. He says "I forgot to add about running the ball. What if we get a holding call?"
AGAIN, MATT. I thought you were in range before the scramble? 11 yards back. Holding is a 10 yard flag. So, where does that factor into your "doomsday" fears over running another play? You said yourself that you were FINE with Piniero kicking from around 50 yards.
That sucked dude. Personally, I find Nagy easier to defend than other parts of this team which have failed. But I've come to the conclusion that this just sucked and that his explanation sucked HARDER.
