He was part of some awful Tampa Bay teams after he was drafted in 1998, in his 14 years there they were under .500 for 8 of them - generally means you're getting outscored, which affects plus minus, and then you add on the 3 years with the Flyers before coming to LA and it's probably an overblown number.
He was never really known for his two-way play anyway, more of an offensive guy, but being in those situations doesn't help that stat either. Some guys simply are not great defensive guys and after years of seeing them as fans you kind of know if that stat is real or skewed.
I for sure thought it would have been Jack Johnson, but he is at -126 for his career. And speaking of, the courts denied the conversion of his Chapter 11 BK to Chapter 7 BK over the weekend. This means he will still owe against his settled debt out of future earnings where as under 7 he would have been able to walk away without owing a dime.
Some pretty scathing words from the judge who handed down the decision:
Hoffman, in a 147-page filing, rebuked Johnson for not acting in good faith in his attempts to negotiate a settlement, for failing to hire a forensic accountant to trace the whereabouts of the money from unpaid debts in his name, for failing to liquidate his assets quickly and for continuing to live a lavish lifestyle even as he seeks relief from the courts.
“If the debtor commenced this bankruptcy case intending to comply with his fiduciary duties and use his income to provide creditors with a meaningful recovery, at some point he went astray,” Hoffman wrote.
The whole thing just stinks, and makes me wonder if he really was in on things with his parents. You also shouldn't be spending $50,000 on a wedding if you're in this situation.
