If I want to watch UNC in march I'm not going to watch that game. Besides, we'll be better next year and what went on with the basketball program in Chapel Hill is nothing compared to Syracuse so I can't imagine the NCAA hitting us too hard.

oh no it isn't , what happened in Chapel Hill is far worse than what happened in Syr which is why this is taking so long. SU tried to change a grade , UNC offered non existent courses to football AND basketball players for yrs and Good Ole boy Roy knew all about it. What UNC is gonna get will make Syr look like a fuckin birthday party.

Academic Fraud. If that isn't a blatant lack of institutional control then what the hell is?

"The elephant in the room — the academic fraud scandal — may have something to say about that. And, without prompting, the Tar Heels and coach Roy Williams brought up what a trying season this was on a few occasions following their year-ending, 79-72 loss to No. 1 Wisconsin in an NCAA Tournament West Region semifinal Thursday night. That seemed like a veiled reference to the ongoing NCAA investigation that could derail this team’s high hopes.

A wide-ranging scandal in the school’s Department of African and Afro-American Studies including grade changes, forged faculty signatures on grade rolls and limited or no class time has hung over the school like a dark cloud after college sports’ governing body reopened its investigation last summer, when additional people agreed to cooperate. In January, former North Carolina athletes Devon Ramsay and Rashanda McCants — admittedly part of the scandal — filed a lawsuit against North Carolina and the NCAA, alleging they never received an education they were promised.

What happened at Syracuse was a legitimate athletic issue. The basketball staff and the athletic department were completely involved in making ineligible athletes eligible. What happened at UNC was worse, but it wasn't an athletic issue. It was completely academic.

As far as the lawsuit where two athletes sued because they never received an education they were promised. That's a silly lawsuit, how many people go into college expecting an education and leave without a job in their field? Or leave without a job, or without the education they were expecting? This wasn't the athletic department making ineligible athletes eligible. It was strictly an academic issue, which is worse for the university, but it's not nearly the athletic issue that occurred at Syracuse.

Yes and no.

It wasn't exclusively an athletic issue at UNC as other students were allowed to enroll in the paper classes (because they can't make classes exclusive to athletes) but if you're trying to convince anyone that it was a coincidence that a hugely disproportionate number of athletes were enrolled in those courses, you're going to fail. NOBODY is going to believe that BS.

The problems at UNC are almost certainly rooted in the athletic department.

The problems at Syracuse were worse only in one meaningful way, in that it wasn't purely academic issues. (there were issues involving failed drug tests, and impermissible benefits) But the scandal at UNC is worse than Syracuse in that it lasted longer, spanned multiple coaches, appears to be an institutional issue, and wasn't limited to just one or two sports.

Seems both fan bases (UNC and Syracuse) are trying to downplay the seriousness of their violations. Make no mistake, both were a very big deal. But I think UNC's is worse. That doesn't mean the punishment will bear that out.

I'm not trying to convince anyone that is was a coincidence. But, what I am saying is that this was not done through the athletic department. The director of basketball operations, Roy Williams, Butch Davis, Dean Smith, etc. were not the masterminds behind this plan. Obviously it looks like it was done to keep athletes eligible but it's not something that was done by the athletic department to keep them eligible.

If the issue at Carolina is what I believe it was, a few individuals outside of the athletic department who, on their own, decided to take matters into their own hand and create easy/sham classes and graded their papers, made up grades, for a long period of time, then my opinion is that it's not as bad as the situation with Syracuse and what they did to keep Fab Melo eligible, and how they didn't report failed drug tests.

I haven't said it was a coincidence, but I will say I took an independent study course and made an A without once turning in a long report, without a syllabus, without having a regularly scheduled class time, and there was no assigned classroom for this credit. Obviously, I still had work, and still did it all. But, if I were on an athletic team I don't see how my coach would've known what I did or did not do in that class. I know these athletes didn't do their work, but that doesn't mean at the time that everyone should have known. How would you tell a difference, as a coach, in my independent study credit, and Daniel Bolicks, or Dante Calabrias, or Charlotte Smiths, etc.?

It's pretty clear it wasn't just "a few individuals" who acted on their own. It was a systemic problem that lasted nearly two decades. The level of naivete it takes to believe a handful of individuals acted on their own accord to make that happen is mind-blowing to me.

And I really can't fathom how you think compromising an entire department for nearly two decades, that effected hundreds of athletes, is better than changing one of Melo's grades.

See this is my problem with most uNC Cheat fans. Just admit that cheating was done, bend on over, and take that double penetration probation like a man.

Wainstein's report stated that the practice of academic fraud began by at the very least 1993. That would affect coaches and banners:

Basketball
Dean Smith-(1961-1997) 1 NCAA Title 1993
Bill Guthridge-(1997-2000)
Matt Doherty-(2000-2003)
Roy Williams- (2003-present) NCAA Titles 2005 & 2009

Football
Mack Brown- (1988-1997)
Carl Torbush- (1997-2000)
John Bunting- (2001-2006)
Butch Davis- (2007-2010)
?Larry Fedora-(2012-present)

Yea, I'm sure it was just a handful of people guilty of the culpability.

Didn't their football program get hit already? I remember that happening years ago. It's no shock that their basketball program is dirty as hell also... can't wait to see ole roy get his walking papers.
