Yep the coastal resort towns are OK, inland is another story.
It is getting dicey in Cabo though.

Crime rate is close to the same as any city. The issue is overblown because that it the way the media paints it. Even in Europe there are thieves in the streets.

FYI Military members currently need permission to travel to Mexico. Depending on where they want to travel it takes a different rank to approve. The resort towns can be approved by any Officer in their chain, travel to restricted states takes a Colonels approval.
In some units only ones getting approval to travel to restricted States are those who have family there.

The only reason I say some is because I can't say for certain if its DOD policy or just the units I'm familiar with.
Hell I'm a DOD Civilian on Nellis and I need to get the OK to go if I wanted to go.

I'd have no problem going to a resort area, but there's no reason for me to ask if I can travel to an area where I might lose my head.

Not sure where your going, but check the State Department travel warnings. If you just going on a cruise to port cities or Cancun no major issues, but inland is questionable at best.
I would say "Stay Sober" but I don't think thats an option in Mexico.

I was far from staying at resorts in a beach town too. Lived with an old lady in Cuernavaca, went to Taxco, Mexico City, PV, and San Sebastián and the people were beyond nice.

That is logical. Military members are not civilian, ordinary tourists. If you go there on some kind of mission -even off duty- you’ll be messing with the “bad guys”. Those horror stories about getting beheaded are exaggerated, those are just guys that had it coming to them. Don’t believe me ask @sonnyblack65

Those first towns you mentioned are in two of the most violent states: Morelos and Guerrero. The horror stories are true but overblown. Yes there is crime but not as painted by the media. BTW, I have an apt in PV, the fishing and golf there are world class.
