Hi ladies,

Its been a few years since I have posted but I figured I would stop in and ask you experts about NHL drafts since I have never really paid much attention to them......ever.

Do college players have to play a minimum amount of years before they can enter the draft? Also, do any non college players have to be a certain age before they can be signed?

I saw the Wings signed Danny DeKeyser from Western Michigan and I dont understand why he doesnt have to enter the draft? I am only familiar with NFL drafting so I am completely lost how the NHL draft work since its they arent deling with only college players.

Thanks for anyone who can help my dumbass understand.

Not all college or juniour players are 'required' to enter the draft as I understand it. They can forgo registering themselves and just be free agents so to speak.

Well said. To add to it, not all players that have been drafted are immediately signed to contracts. It's similar to baseball. A player is eligible to officially join the league at 18. A team can draft for the rights to sign them and they have a specific timeframe in which they would have to, but it isn't immediate, which allows them to maintain amateur status. So the player can play anywhere until the team officially pays them.

Hi my friend,

as far as I know players are not required to play a certain number of years in college. I'm pretty sure it's more of an age issue than years in juniors or college but there are people on here a lot smarter than I am about that.

Good to see you again.

I think 17 is draft eligible. And these guys going UFA are either undrafted or were unsigned by drafting team. That's my impression.

Gooch I think dash and a few of the others are also pretty good with that stuff and they are not on at the moment. I'm pretty sure most of the responses are correct (except mine) :laugh3: .

I don't know much about that myself.

TSNBobMcKenzie: EDM trades F Tobias Rieder (Kitchener) to PHX for F Kale Kessy (Kamloops). Rieder smallish/skilled. EDM doesn't need that, PHX does.

If Kale Kessy plays one game in the NHL, I'll eat quoi's hat...

And Gooch, don't worry about being a dumbass, you're probably not, haha. We all learn from each other here. Most of the stuff I've learned about hockey comes from this group. Seriously.

Also Gooch: who are you aligned with team wise friend? Obviously I'm a fan of the avi. And I'm a honorary Hoosier, so there's that.

There is no minimum amount of years a player must have before being drafted, it's an age requirement. Teams often draft kids out of prep high schools. Any draftee can be signed immediately after being drafted but those in the NCAA ranks would loose their NCAA eligibility upon doing so.

A player must turn 18 on or before Sept 15th (I believe) of that draft year to be eligible for the draft. If a player goes unselected through two draft eligible years they become a UFA and free to sign an ELC with whomever they choose.

In the case of DeKeyser he was eligible for the '08 and '09 drafts and because he wasn't selected became a UFA.

I am originally from the Pittsburgh area and moved to Indiana at 19 with my family. I am all Pittsburgh across the board and yes that includes the Pirates.

Matt Cooke just scored! 1-0 Pens!

Thanks for the responses guys! Good to be back and hope to make a habit of it! I forgot what its like to post on a message board thats not jacked with idiots.

Thank you Bossman for checking in on me the last few years. World needs more good people like you my friend!

As far as my original post, I remember Pat Lafontaine playing at 17 years old and never fully understood how drafting/signing young players worked. I just knew it wasnt like the NFL draft so thank you all again for the info!!!
