Well, that's the bottom line. The batteries wear-out in 5 - 8 years and the cost of replacement is, you guessed it, another $8,000. So, they never save you any fuel costs. So, I'm not sure what the point is except electric cars can be really fast with the electric motor torque.

Where do you come up with this stuff Gator?

Toyota hybrid battery replacement costs

Below is a list of MSRP battery cost details for the three generations of Prius model, as well as those for the Camry Hybrid sedan and Highlander Hybrid SUV.

2001-2003 Toyota Prius (1st generation) - $3,649 minus $1,350 "core credit"
2004-2008 Toyota Prius (2nd generation) - $3,649 minus $1,350 "core credit"
2009-present Toyota Prius (3rd generation) - $3,939 minus $1,350 "core credit"
Toyota Camry Hybrid - $3,541, core credit deducted
Toyota Highlander Hybrid - $4,848, core credit deducted

Secondly batteries routinely last over 10 years and generally last longer than the average gas motor. Consumer reports tested a 2003 Prius last year with 215,000 original miles on it that showed negligible diminished performance over a new car.

Saw one of those in Palm Beach Floriduh last August. Surprised it was a hybrid but not surprised at the cost.

I kinda like that.
Reminds me of the El Camino concept.
I really don't understand why they don't still make those.

I don't understand why a Fisker and a Tesla are in a thread about hybrids. I love me some electric cars (as you can see by other threads - still want to order wifey a Model X), but hybrids smack of retardation to me.
If they had a little fuel cell to cover emergencies when you ran the batteries down to far, I could see that. But both gas and electric seems the worst.

Why are you so down on them so bad Gator. You seem to have a lot of misinformation fueling your hate...

Especially the 8K battery replacement cost every five or so years b.s. I called you on that and you didn't respond..

Where do you come up with this stuff Gator?

I see the future as electric.... but currently hybrids have their place as transitional vehicles that provide infinite range with our current infrastructure unlike electric cars.

If you put a square back camper shell on it it would look like a sleak Aztec.

not sure that is a good thing.

Just bought a '13 Chevy Cruze. Resisted supporting Obama Motors but for what I needed (an economical car for the highway) I couldn't find anything better, plus it has a 1.8L turbocharged engine and M6 transmission. I got it on CarMax. Their financing is fabulous (no downpayment and 1.9% - first one put 5 grand down and got same-as-cash for 5 years!) and compare tool on the website is great. Sign a few papers, drive off. Never any funny business with them. Just straight simple financing of purchase price with no bullshit fees.

How is that thing. Enough power???
GM is putting that into a lot of their vehicles.

Haven't even gotten it yet. It's being moved from another CarMax store. Should have it tomorrow night. A turbo-charged 1.8 in that little car mated with an M6 should be more than enough power! We'll see.

Just hate to be supporting Government Motors. :frusty:

Meh...you're not supporting those dickheads by buying a used one. Just buy the parts from Ebay or AliExpress and you'll be good.

My nephew has a Malibu my brother bought him to drive on the highway to college then sit. It has that tiny engine (or some other 4 cylinder) and it drives well. Of course, there's so little metal in the thing it doesn't weigh much. The body panels feel like a can of Coors light.

Could be wrong but I don't think the 1.8 is the turbo. I thought that was the 1.4.

Congrats on the new car.
Just bought Mrs Taz a used Ford Edge, went to CarMax they wound up being 3k more for the same car similar mileage (their 20k, the one we bought 22k) So I bought it from a local Ford dealer instead. Got 1.9 financing for 5yrs also, didn't need to put down a downpayment but I did just to get the payments lower. I also went to Car Sense same thing. Best thing about getting from the local ford dealer was the warranty was much better than CarMax. CarMax if you wanted an extended warranty I was looking at another $1500. At the Ford Dealer they threw it in on the deal.

You are correct. The 1.4L has more torque which I don't particularly care about.

I own a gas / battery burner. Bought it used. And the only downside is the price I paid. But the gas mileage is great.
