I've NEVER understood handing the ball off when you need 1 yard or less.

It takes too much damn time to turn around and hand the ball off (usually about 2-3 yards BEHIND the LOS) and defenses can quickly fill gaps to stuff runs from gaining yards.

No reason a QB sneak can't gain you 1 yard each time unless your center is a true POS....

Yes, I know...Cook=POS, but I'm talking in general from Highschool to college, to NFL...you need 1 yard...I'm not going backwards to go forward in that moment.

Gresham still has this year and next. We're really holding onto a 4th tight end so we can have options in 2015?

Plus -- Charles is fine, but he's nothing more than an average number 2 tight end at best. He doesn't have the athletic talent of a top pass catching tight end.

Nope, but he is a 4th TE in a heavy 2 TE set offense. So he is depth.

Two TE set offenses do not use FB's very often at all.

Not true. Watch the 49ers play offense. They often run out of a set with two tight ends and two running backs. The Ravens also used to play a lot of two tight end sets when Dickson and Pita were both healthy. That hasn't stopped Vota Leach from being a pro bowl fullback.

Last I heard both those two tight end teams with a fullback participated in the Super Bowl last year.

You can't just make things up.

I will say yes to the 49ers, I would not with the Ravens. The Ravens do not run much two TE sets, that is why they use their all-pro FB more. Yes, they have the personnel to use the two TE sets but I wouldn't say it is an offense that has emplyed it much.

Plus, when the 49ers are using the Two TE set, how often is their FB on the field at that exact time and what is the situation? Short to go?

Two TE offenses may use a FB in their system, but they don't usually put two TE's on teh field WITH a FB unless it is short to go situations.

And it would still be more useful than the 0 snaps Charles has gotten the last 4 games.

Yep..... In fact, even with Orson Charles in uniform, he still hasn't been given a chance to line up at fullback. They've used Alex Smith, but not Charles.

I know this---Gresham is a disaster in run blocking. If they are going to run out of two tight end sets they need to do it with Smith and Eifert in the game as much as possible. Gresham has been ok in the passing game this year but we don't need to run the ball to his side at all. He can't block shit. I would rather see a fullback in there when we are running than a worthless blocking tight end. Jeez I wish we had kept Conner. Charles has been a total waste of a roster spot.

Blame that on Hue Jackson then.
