Draft schmaft

hey, didn't you guys have Cliff Fletcher for a while, too?
Ironically, I think that was the time when the Flames were drafting well.

for comparison (and it pains me to do this) here are the Canucks 1st rounders from the 90s:
Nedved (passed over Primeau, Ricci and Jagr for that one),
Shawn Antoski,
Alex Stojanov,
Libor Polacek,
Mike Wilson,
Matthias Ohlund (can't complain about that one),
Josh Holden,
Brad Ference,
Bryan Allen,
and then closed out on a strong one with the Sedins.

So how many different GM's were there in the 80's as opposed to the 90's?

PS: What is this 1st round you speak of!?

Trader Cliff Fletcher was GM of the Flames during the glory years in the 80's. He left for Toronto and then fleeced Doug Risebrough in a 10 player swap. Al Coates took over after Riser was fired to close out the 90's.

As for the 1st round, yeah the Wings always seem to find those gems in the later rounds. Flames currently don't have a pick in either of the first two rounds of this year's draft.

right on, i knew about the fletcher thing, i was just too lazy to look up the rest..:) And i really have no clue why swedes have the ability to scout so well...

Habs were equally awful in the 90s

1990 Turner Stevenson
1991 Brent Bilodeau
1992 David Wilkie
1993 Saku Koivu (Rory Fitzpatrick drafted 2nd!)
1994 Brad Brown
1995 Terry Ryan
1996 Matt Higgins
1997 Jason Ward
1998 Eric Chouinard
1999 Alexander Buturlin

The last 5 are really some good picks. I say last 5 because Brad Brown looks like a great pick compared to the following ones.

After that, most of the players while not great are all in the NHL and are legitimet NHLers so thats something. Gets a little iffy with Chipchura in 2004 and David Fischer in 2006, but he was out of high school so he might not be a bust yet.

After the first 5 picks the first round is almost as much a crap shoot as the rest of the draft.

Scouting is FAR from an exact science.

Ottawa

1992 - Alexei Yashin
1993 - Alexandre Daigle
1994 - Radek Bonk
1995 - Bryan Berard
1996 - Chris Phillips
1997 - Marian Hossa
1998 - Mathieu Chouinard
1999 - Martin Havlat

The first few years they were picking so high that it was generally Central Scouting who was making the pick. Later first round picks like Hossa and Havlat were nice picks.

The Sens also plucked some serviceable to excellent players from rounds other than the the 1st:

1993 - Pavol Demitra (9th round)
1994 - Daniel Alfredsson (6th round)
1996 - Andreas Dackell (6th round)
1996 - Sami Salo (9th round)
1997 - Magnus Arvedson (5th round)
1998 - Mike Fisher (2nd round)
1998 - Chris Neil (6th round)
1999 - Chris Kelly (3rd round)

The draft was of huge importance for the Sens in building a team that went to the playoffs 12 straight years from 1996-2008.

The other day, one of the local radio stations said that the highest drafted player on the Wings was Dan Cleary at 13th. I remember thinking to myself that I was surprised it was not Brad Stuart.
I just did some research and I was right. Stuart was taken 3rd by San Jose.
The next highest pick after Cleary is Brad May at 14th which was surprising.
The only first round picks by the wings on the team are Kronwall, taken 29th and Kindl, an up and coming d-man who was taken 19th overall who should see some ice team in the next few years.

Wasn't Stojanov dealt straight up for Markus Naslund?

yeah, Stojanov was 6th overall, Naslund was 8th, so we actually traded down. :p
I think Stojanov was a fireman within two years of the trade.

2003: Eric Fehr (18th overall)
2004: Alexander Ovechkin (1st overall), Jeff Schultz (27th overall), and Mike Green (29th overall)
