This is one of the only things I have wondered about. Does the 85 scholarships refer to the whole time of the program's existence? Or does it rotate every so many years? If a school only has 85 scholarships, wouldn't many have used them up by now? I thought right many student athletes got awarded scholarships.

This is a weirdly worded question; but you can only have 85 scholarship players enrolled at any given time (in football). So If you have 85 players currently on scholarship, lose 15 to graduation and expect to lose 5 to leaving early, then teams will commonly sign around 20 kids to fill those spots. There is some weird exceptions for kids who enroll early or "greyshirt" but in general that's what happens. Teams might "oversign" if they expect to lose kids but they don't quite know yet .

After I tried looking it up, I saw it is 85 scholarship players at a time. I always just heard the phrase 85 scholarships. Makes sense now. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the greyshirt rule effects the maximum class size of "25" in any given year. You are allowed to have no more than 25 sign in a year, and no more than a total of 85. But teams get around the "25" in a year with a host of things including early enrollment counting toward the previous years "25".

The greyshirt means the kid can (I think) come to the school not on scholarship or wait a year to be part of the next class. But yes, the oversigning rules (25 per class) are gotten around with having kids enroll early. Separate from the 85 rule.

I wouldn’t say at any given time. There can only be 85 scholarship players at the start of the season and for its duration.

Due to signing 5th years and transfers teams routinely have more than 85 from NSD in Feb to the start of fall camp. For most schools this works itself out with transfers and deciding who to keep for a 5th year.
