Enough to want to get rid of them for possible tradeable assets later. It’s the 2nd smallest market in MLB and they have 147 M offer to Hosmer. That’ll be hard for a Cali team to match. There’s also long been a thought that the Royals decisionmaking this offseason depends on signing Hosmer.I don't get the "clear payroll space" part. How much could they have been paying those 2 guys?

Probably waiting for some other suitor besides the Padres and Royals, like Boston. Doesn't look like that's going to happen; and the Padres aren't ponying up 160 some odd million it would take to match 147 million in Missouri dollars. Or at least, I'd be really surprised if they did.Why in the world hasn't he taken that yet? He's not going to do better.
Because reasons. 7 years 147 might mean they think he'll be around for the next window. The notion has been for a while they'd do more if they signed Hosmer like maybe looking into Moustakas, but I digress. This is all really stupid, imo. Escobar at SS is just trolling me at this point. Feels very fanservice-yPerhaps this is to do more than just bring back Hosmer?
I honestly don't get it, though. Why throw a bunch of money at Hos? He's a great ballplayer, but getting him back doesn't make you a contender. You lost Cain, Mous is yet to be signed... but it appears he's gone too.
You have one of the worst farm systems in baseball. Isn't throwing a 150 mil at a first baseman a tad counterproductive at this point? Is it just to please the fans, and keep them coming out during a rebuild? Keep Hosmer, Escobar and Perez in the lineup everyday, so maybe the fan-base will still feel a connection to the old team?

It's more a move for 2020 or 2021 if you think about it. Which... I am not sure how anyone can be that confident in Hosmer looking at his career, but hey, not my money. That's what I can tell myself, right?Dumping Moss was a good move.
Giving Hosmer 17-20% of the team's allotted payroll is not a good move. If Hosmer needs $19-24 million a year then he needs to be on a team with a $150+ million payroll. In reality, he is probably too expensive for the Padres too.
So, my guess is this: if they sign Hosmer, they'll make a more serious run at Moustakas. If they get Moustakas at a reasonable deal, great. At the same time, I am not sure what this achieves if they don't have surplus value like I am pretty confident Duffy is going to have provided his arm doesn't fall off. Starting Escobar over Mondesi is peak stupidity unless it's for service time at this point.
Unprecedented is also 147 million when they've never even sniffed a 100M deal before. The team is not going to do that. It would be unprecedented for the current Royals' ownership. Since my alt is black francis, obviously I want our team to win, but we have to be realistic.
If they sign Hosmer, it will be to appease the fans and make him the face of the franchise. It will not be to compete. My guess is that Hosmer has contract offer from the Royals' that is acceptable to him, dollar wise but he wants to play for a team that is committed to winning now rather than 2-3 years from now. He's in his prime. He might be past his prime by the time the Royals farm system produces quality MLB players like it did from 2013-2015.Unprecedented is also 147 million when they've never even sniffed a 100M deal before.
Curt Flood ruined baseball. George Steinbrenner ass fucked baseball.Royals are ruining baseball
