What's the deal with the agency that Doughty is with? Apparently Josh Bailey has the same agent. For some unknown reason he hasn't signed his qualifier. Wang has a policy that if a player doesn't sign before camp he will be forced to sit out the season, & he ISN'T kidding.

Bailey was so bad last year he was sent down to the minors for 2 weeks. How could his agent possibly believe he deserves more than the qualifier?

Amen Brother!!! People reamed me out because i said Chris Johnson should be a man and honor the 5 year contract that he signed. I am sure nobody forced him to do so at gunpoint.

I don't think you can compare the NFL to the NHL. IIRC, the NHL guarantees contracts for their players. The NFL does not.

The situation in Cinci was particularly ludicrous IMO. The owner/GM said that Carson Palmer signed a contract, and they expect him to live up to his obligation. I call BS. Laveranues Coles signed with them in '09. This is from Wikipedia. (not the best source I know, but I'm lazy)

Coles was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals on March 4, 2009. He would agree in principle to a four-year, $28 million contract.

He was released by the Bengals on March 4, 2010, exactly one year after signing with the organization.

The NFL is hypocritical. These guys are cut loose the minute the are too old, underperform, don't make good cap sense, etc. I don't really have a problem with that, but they don't have the right to get all sanctimonious when guys hold out.

It's true. There's no outplaying one's contract. They made the agreement to play for that specific dollar amount, whatever the performance. Maybe owners should be able to pay players less if they under-perform.

They can. They can cut them and not pay them at all. Jared makes a lot of good points. So I'll just say +1 to his post.

Actually, this is Ludacris in Cincinatti... ;)

Doughty has already declined a 9 year, $61 mill deal that would make him the highest paid King ($6.8m per) along side Kopitar.
what more can he want?

the answer is probably less term so he can UFA earlier.

Exactly. The NFL teams can cut a guy and void his contract at any point. It is total BS to say players should be forced to uphold a contract when the other party doesn't have to.

I understand the NFL can terminate players at any point they like. All well and good, it's business. But if you sign a 5 year deal play it out. If Johnson wanted a new deal after 3 years, sign a 3 year deal originally.

Yes i understand he has earned a bigger payday from on the field performance. But if you have ever read any of his tweets(especially blasting the fans and calling them racists, because they told him to end the holdout) he should be thankful he is an NFL player. Based on his tweets his other job options would most likely be....

1. Cab/Bus Driver
2. Crackhead
3. Armed Robber
4. Crackhead
5. Poster child for staying in college
6. Crackhead
7. Maple Leafs GM

Isn't that true in any job/profession? Go to your boss and tell him you would like to triple/quadruple your salary of what you have agreed to work for. Also kindly remind him you won't be returning to work until he agrees. See how that works out.

Growing up, his favourite team was the Kings, so it can't be the moolah...I agree with puck.

It depends. Contract employee? At will? It varies. People threaten to leave their jobs without a raise, people go on strike, etc. They are all calculated risks - possibility of losing job/security for something better. You said yourself you don't think Chris Johnson is suited for much else in life (I have no idea, don't know much about him personally), so smart for him to get what he can while he can in a career that usually doesn't last long (especially at his position).

If he is hoping to score big as a UFA 3-5 years down the road, isn't it kind of about the money still? Just in a slightly different way.

Money and control (and women) - Drew wants to be the Tony Montana of hockey players.

The difference is that I can walk into my boss' office at the power company and tell him that I am quitting because I got a job at another power company. Chris Johnson doesn't have that option.

I'd like to see the NFL guarantee the money for these guys. Then you could absolutely play hardball with the players that hold out. Plus, imagine what Washington's cap would look like right now with that lunatic handing out ridiculous contracts all the time?

Jared with another great point, I am really starting to like this guy, he...

...hey! (turns on mic) Personal foul, unnecessary and unrelated playa hatin', 15 rep points...

Actually, I'm sure we hate our owner more than you do. But to be fair, they had a good off season this year, got younger, and are about $10 million under the cap (near 20th in the league in spending). Bruce Allen is doing a great job so far. It's going to take a few years to rebuild, but they are doing the right things... though a real QB would be nice. ;)

Slim, jared and Eloco, i absolutely get your points and respect your opinions. Me personally, i just find it hard to understand why you hold out for more money when you agreed to terms.

The other thing that drives me insane is you were given an oppurtunity for a free education (via scholarship) which isnt available to a majority of our youth and you walk away from it for money??? And when you leave your institution of higher learning, you can't speak publicly, give an interview or compose a sentence without making yourself come across as an ass?

Bottom line for me is you make damn good money playing a game meant for children. Be thankful for what you earn and stop the more, more more attitudes.

This is why I love being a Lion's fan. I can say the most vile, horrible thing about anyone else's team, and they invariably ask, "well, which team do you like smart guy?" When I reply with Detroit, they get the same look on their face as my mom did when I would come in with a bloody knee from crashing my bike...

I agree that Washington is moving in a good direction. I'm also cautiously optimistic about my Lions.

What if Snyder bought a new team and then hired Matt Millen as his GM?
