There's something to be said for having butts in seats regardless of how they get there though.

They may get the tickets for free, but they still have to pay for parking. Hopefully they then buy some over-priced beer, food, or souvenirs.

Then there's the intangible benefits of (hopefully) growing your fanbase by getting people who have never been to a game before in to realize how awesome hockey really is.

Not defending the Coyotes or Bettman, just saying.

Yeah, those are some good points - It just seems that they have hit a wall as far as attracting additiional folks to games. I don't doubt they have some diehard hockey fans in Glendale, they just don't have enough diehard hockey fans and the clock is ticking.

it was a build it and they will come real estate play when they decided to build the mall and make Glendale a sports zone ... the people havent come ... until they do and build up the density whereby the fans are actually local and dont have to drive 50 miles to get to the game ... youre gonna have the status quo

Yup. They might have had a chance if they actually stayed in Phoenix.

Interesting. The pdf linked shows registration numbers by state / region for USA Hockey 2012.

Page six goes state by state. Shows that AZ has 4113 Registered members, 1717 over age 19 (Transplants who keep playing, I'd guess). That's pretty healthy all things considered.

That's around the same number of players as places like Iowa, Indiana, Utah and Montana. But roughly twice places like Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Also worth noting that Ohio has roughly the same as Colorado and Connecticut. Whooo!

Hawaii has 12 peopled. Oregon has 881. Cross Portland off the expansion list :)

I didn't know there were 382 people in Mississippi with enough money to play hockey.

This post probably shouldn't make me laugh as much as it did.

/Oh well, I'm likely heading downstairs when it's all said and done anyway.

for the first time this season in phoenix

Only if they want to pay. Touching the pay lot is a free lot for a huge shopping center. Good news is many Phx fans know the money issue and pay to park in order to show support for the team. The issue is the city saying 5 years is the only out the team gets. Owners will have no choice but moving

Coming soon to an NHL rink near you: The Honolulu Diamond Heads. :D

Wonder if one of them is a poster here?

Hawaiian? You out there? Does the 12 on your team include a goalie? AND WHO DO YOU PLAY AGAINST?

Maybe get IPW to photoshop some Lei's and grass skirts on these guys:

Don't know how good they are, but there's definitely more than 12 of them. And that outlines one fact that hasn't been brought up yet about those numbers... while membership in USA hockey is probably a decent proxy for participation rates it doesn't necessarily include everybody. I played in NYC for years and membership was required but when I moved to a league out in CT that had no such requirement I was perfectly happy not paying USA hockey.

More than 9,000 in Maryland. That's awesome. When I was a kid, there were like 2 ice rinks in the entire state and they both sucked. Now there are dozens of facilities, most with multiple ice sheets and usually really nice.
