Anybody have any good recommendations for hockey related books? I'm trying to avoid biographies. Read "The Code" which was great but got pretty redundant after a while. I trust you guys more than the users on Amazon. Thanks in advance.

Boys of Winter
The Game and Home Game (You MUST read those if you even remotely like hockey and/or Canada)
In the crease - By Dick Irvin. Some great stories about what it's like to play goalie. Probably more enjoyable to me than most.

If you are willing to drop your no Biography rule, I am currently reading "Herb Brooks: The inside story of a hockey mastermind" and it is tremendous. It doesn't even touch on the Olympic team until 2/3 of the way into the book. A lot about his time as a player and as coach at the U. His battles with Badger Bob and the Boston rivalry. Great, great book that pays proper tribute to a great, great man.

I think matt is referring to "The Boys on the Bus". I thought that was a movie, but it could be a book as well.

"When the Lights Went Out" by Gare Joyce is a great read - Of course, it's about the Punch-Up in Piestany (Canada - Russia WJHC 1987)

I know you weren't looking for biographies, but I really liked Phil Esposito's book (can't remember the title though).

Ken Dryden's The Game is a very good read as well (previously mentioned by 43)

In the Bin: Reckless and Rude Stories from the Penalty Boxes of the NHL by Lloyd Freeberg was very light and funny

I wish the Flyers had different stories. By the age of 6 I probably knew "Oh the Russians left and Ed said 'Youre not getting payed' and they came back and we kicked ass"

Same bullshit in every Flyers book.

Someone already suggested The Game.

Recently read Probert's book and it was awesome. My former roommate who only watches hockey occasionally randomly picked it up off of our coffee table and started reading it. He loved it and couldn't put it down.

old but very good

Net Worth by David Cruise & Alison Griffiths

National Bestseller "Net Worth is explosive. It details in print for the first time much of what has only been talked about in the past....It chronicles the fates and fortunes of everyone who is anyone, from Jim Norris to Clarence Campbell to Alan Eagleson to Gordie Howe to Bobby Orr to John Ziegler to Lindros, perhaps the most significant hockey book ever written." Bob McKenzie, The Toronto Star
