I am thinking i would probably take CHipper over Boggs and Brett... But i think it is very close...

I probably would too... He might be as high as 2nd...

This could change, but at first glance, I'd say

1. Schmidt
2. Jones
3. Matthews
4. Boggs
5. Brett
6. Robinson
7. Cabrera??
8. Traynor
9. Santo
10. Nettles
Wright??

Actually tough to rank... 2-6 could be interchangable depending on your mood... Then 7-12 could be as well....

And, where does Miguel fit in??

Then again, he did so much in the first half of his career that he didn't need to do too much to have a HOF caliber career.

If you break his career into two segments: up to age 32 and after age 32...

Up to 32 - .352/.443/.480, 150 OPS+
After 32 - .304/.387/.407, 112 OPS+

I don't see how you don't think he's a HOFer...he had a 90 WAR, 131 OPS+. 400+ OBP

Because I don't know if anyone who was that average over half of their career can really be a HOF'er.

I didn't realize David Wright was so in the discussion. He won't challenge Schmidt unless Arod shares his supplier but it looks like he has a legitimate chance to end up in the top 5 or 6.

That is such a silly comment... The EYE TEST can only do so much... and it gets skewed by personal preferences... If I like a player, then my eye is going to like a player... At the end of the day when you look at who had the better career, it is a numbers game... And Boggs has better overall statistics IMO...

With all due respect to stats and their importance, in this particular case, fuck stats.

I want George Brett on my team and in my clubhouse, I'd probably make him captain.

He just explained that Boggs was not "average" over the second half of his career.

In the seasons he mentioned (1990-1999), Boggs contributed a 31.1 WAR - including his negative last season in TB... That is significantly above average....

I don't know what the standard deviations are but a 112 OPS+ is close enough to average for me.

Cabrera is he a 3rd base, 1st base, or outfielder? If 3rd I would put him at #2

A-Rod is he SS or 3rd? Steroids?

david wright might be one of the most underrated baseball players of all time... Look at his career so far, he has been damn good... and looking at the other 3B players he will certainly be a top 10 guy when he retires... I would probably put him as the 7th best 3B of all time right now...

I agree, I think the top 6 is clear with number 1 being clear. Where do guys like Scott Rolen, Adrian Beltre, Buddy Bell, Ken Boyer, Sal Bando, and Home Run Baker fit? And what is up with third basemen with the last name that starts with "B"?

How is Pie Traynor better than Boggs, Brett, and Robinson?

. Cabreras days at third weren't that long, and were not that pretty when not at the plate. Id put George Kell in there before Miggy. And Id take George Brett over Boggs. But that last part has nothing to do with any stats for me. George Brett is the shit.

How is Pie Traynor better than Boggs, Brett, and Robinson?

Because I am an idiot at times. Brett and Boggs should have been ahead of Traynor.

I have never been that found of Robinson as most others are. IMO if not for the WS in70 and 71 he would not be considered the greatest defensive 3rd baseman, but one of the top five. Offensively he met the smallest level of what I would look for in a 3rd baseman .270 ave and around 15 homers.

Lastly about Robinson, I have the opposite of homerism about Baltimore and admit to downgrading their players.

I would take either one in a heartbeat, but I'd give the overall nod to Boggs.

Cal Ripken after age 30 had a 97 OPS+ and 26.5 WAR (half of that time being at 3B).

Would you seriously doubt his HOF qualifications?

I would give it to Brett between the two mentioned.

It just seemed to me Brett always delivered clutch hits. And the way he reacted to the pine tar bat is classic.

If Brett would have played in New York or Boston he would have been knighted, deity, or just plainly acknowledged as the greatest ever.

According to the stats you gave i would take Wade Boggs... the OPS+ and oWAR are too close that they are practically a wash... But it says Boggs was the far superior defender... far superior...

So i would take Boggs... But let me go and do my own analysis maybe I will change my mind since i hate WAR and all adjusted statistics...

Having watched Boggs most of his career I'd say he was very good on balls hit straight up the foul line but may have played too close to said line frequently.

He didn't have much range. Brett had a definite advantage in that area.

His throws from 3d to 1st were another strong point. They almost never pulled the fielder off the bag.

so basically all people who picked brett over boggs was because they liked the way Brett played the game...
