The Red Sox led by 9 games on September 3rd, and now will sit at home and watch the playoffs after Tampa Bay caught and passed them.

The Braves also led the Wild Card by 8.5 games on September 6th, and they, too, will sit at home for the playoffs, after being caught and passed by the Cards.

Neither of these make me feel any better about the Giants sitting home for the playoffs. Well, OK, just a teeny little bit. :peace:

Is it wrong that I am over joyed at the Braves failure of epic proportions?

Does a 2011 Giants fan have any right to laugh at another team's collapse?

Just sayin...

At the Braves? No.

At the Boston Red $ox and their $220million worth of failure? YES! And I love every minute of it.....and after their ESPN the Magazine title? YES!
(Think if the Giants had $100million more worth of players on the team for the entire season that they would have made the playoffs.....and even if the Dodgers had the Yankees payroll, the Giants should still make it in at least as a WC.)

Pretty incredible day of baseball.

This.

Not just what happened (2 wild card races coming down to final game) but in the AL especially, Boston goes up early, then loses their first game of the YEAR when leading after 8, but they say oh well TB down 7-0, then TB comes back on the YANKS (did they take a dive to fuck the Red Sox?) to win in a walk off in 12?

You couldn't literally script a more exciting last day (obviously leaving aside the Giants being involved)

Boston started the year 0-11 or something, then looked like locks for the playoffs, then missing them...to a team that started the year 0-6!

Love this game.

No team had ever made the playoffs with the start that the Red Sox had...so the baseball gods decided to toy with their fanbase before swatting them down..

Oh, and I'll freely admit that I enjoyed watching two other franchises fail at the end like this...makes me feel a bit better about things.

Yeah...I'm an evil and petty man....lol..

Totally.

And I think no team had made the playoffs after TB's start either...until today.

Atlanta no, after Brooks Conrad last year I was hoping they'd get another shot. But the Red Sox? Hell to the yes.

The problem with this feeling is the automatic converse: you also had to endure watching two other franchizes complete miracle runs to make the playoffs. Something the Giants did not accomplish... :tsk:

I don't know, man. I mean we all said we were even for 1993 after Brooks Conrad coaxed the Giants to a championship, but was it really enough?

The look of complete sadness and frustration that I saw on the faces of Braves fans after that (what was it?) 14-inning loss was very similar to the one that 10-year-old me wore in Dodger stadium, oh so many years ago. I even wished Solomon Torres luck and got his autograph the day before. For almost two years, I thought I had something to do with the horrible outcome. Then, the strike happened and I realized most of the people involved with professional sports (on the actually making money level of things) is an asshole, but I digress.

Anyway, I definitely don't wish horribleness on anyone, but no matter what, a set of fans is going to have to feel bad. Plus, we've been going on and on about how any team can make a run at the championship, if they get hot at the right time. Limping into the playoffs doesn't usually bode well. I'm not saying the Braves wouldn't have a chance, but look at some of our predictions. If I recall correctly, they are filled with Phillies and D-backs choices with a smattering of Brew Crew. No one was too optimistic about their chances.

I feel slightly bad for the Braves and their fans. I would feel worse if it were the Giants that eliminated them from contention again. If a similar fate befalls Atlanta next year, I will gladly say they are owed my sympathy. For now, I'll just say we're even. Next up, keeping the Dodgers out of the playoffs for the next decade, despite them having the best starting pitcher and position player in the NL.

And in one single day of baseball, the Giants missing out on the playoffs is forgotten nationally.

Baseball playoffs just got more interesting

All that's left is for the Philth to lose in the playoffs and that would pretty much complete my personal postseason. With 2/3 money turd franchi$es gone, a Yankee loss would make an awesome sweep. I'm totally not bitter.

I think it's obvious the entire country that bothers to follow baseball is rooting for the Yanks and Phillies to lose, except the fans of those teams of course.

I didn't think Tampa would make it but so glad they did, my goal WS is now Tampa - Milwaukee and I don't really care who wins that but lean Brewers.

Since our beloved team is out of it...I'm having a difficult time choosing whom to root for. I dislike both the Yankees and the Phillies, so I hope they die pathetic and humiliating deaths...

Both Milwaukee and Texas winning would be good stories...and a Tampa Bay win would really piss off Red Sox Nation and the Yankee homers....but, since the Rays fanbase doesn't support them that would also be rather lame...
