I am so tired of all this bullshit. Here we go again with the bullpen talk about Lincecum. He has been improving over the last 4-5 starts and one bad outing in Cincinnati , a place where Lincecum has struggled in the past and he is done as a starter ready to be banished to the pen.

Everything in society is so fast now and baseball is not a fast game. You have to stop , look around and study the movements of everything . It's Chess on grass. Lincecum will be back and it's too soon to make drastic changes. Tim Lincecum has a lot of Rock N Roll left to play in a starters roll.

Tim will finish strong this year. With all he has accomplished he deserves to make the adjustments that will put him back in the winners circle. Can't wait until the playoffs start and he proves all the naysayers wrong once again.

Go Giants !!

he had 22 walks and 29 hits allowed 34 innings in May.

That being said, his ERA is a lot higher than his FIP/xFIP (4.18/3.66). So there is room for improvement.

He is going on 2 full calendar years of suckage. He has surges of effectiveness, sure, but the big picture on him is that he is, AT BEST, a #5 SP at this point.

To NOT fret about him and look at alternatives would be blind homerism.

I agree. If we're to go deep, we need to start looking at options. I was reading SI and they are saying Colorado needs to sell. Jhoulys Chacin was the name they put out there. I don't know if he'd be a good fit, but what other names do you think could be in the conversation? And what would be the price? Or rather- who?

The top two are obviously Samardja and Price. Chacin and Arroyo are other names that I have thought about...

Internally, Escobar MIGHT be an option, but his results in AAA this year have been mixed at best (bad is a more realistic description).

Would these be keepers or short term rentals? At 37, Arroyo’s age seems like such a liability. We’d have 3 SP’s closer to 40 than 30 years old and that seems excessive even for Sabean.

And don’t even suggest getting rid of Vogey yet. I’m still attached :bawling:

Arroyo, if they were to target him, would certainly be a rental only. Price and Shark would be intended as longer-term solutions (Shark is still under contract through '15). Chacin would probably be a stop-gap for Crick (keep him at least through '15).

Looking past '14, here is what we have...

'15
Cain
Bum
Huddy
Timmeh

Crick (probably not)
Vogey (not under contract, but is certainly a stop-gap option)
Escobar
Mejia
Kickham
Petit

'16
Cain
Bum

Crick (likely)
Escobar (likely)
Mejia
Blackburn
Blach
Stratton
Flores

My point with this is that even for '15, we have 1 fully open spot (sorry, Vogey), and one spot avail for upgrade (sorry, Timmeh). For '16, we only have 2 spots secured.

Picking up a long-term guy is certainly a possibility.

If Tim is our #5, and it looks like he is, you don't need brilliance from his spot, you need about a .500 record and that's what we do have already. He will surely not start in the playoffs, and in fact likely reprise his role of super pen arm.

Sure.

But there are some other concerns that going after a Price or Samardja would address.

Is Cain still an Ace-like pitcher? Will Huddy be this awesome in '15?

If the answer to either of these questions is "No", then we really need to be in the market for another Ace. These days, if you do not have 2 Aces, you really don't have a chance for the title.

Right now we have Bum and Huddy (Cain is arguable).

In '12 we had Cain and Bum (Vogey was arguable).

In '10 we had Timmeh and Cain (Durty was arguable).

Good points all. As always I trust Sabes to figure out what needs doing.

BTW...

I would like to thank BoB for providing us this space to discuss Timmeh's possible replacements.

Thanks, bro. ;)

How soon they forget you when you are down. I like proving everyone wrong. Lincecum will be back...I have no doubt's about that. Too much heart not to get it done. Shake and bake ! That just happened !

And they stood hand and hand high fives to the end. See you in the playoffs.

Non believers can eat crow when the year is over.

Timmy ain't coming "back." He's pretty much done as a starter, so the only question is how much more rope the FO is going to give him. He's had 12 starts of 5.01 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 33% DIS ball. Unacceptable, especially in a run suppressed environment that MLB has become. 52nd out of 56 qualified starting pitchers in the NL. Bottom 10%. -0.6 WAR.

Put another way, an average AAA call up would do better, on average.

Who has to eat crow if 2014 Timmy is just like 2012 Timmy: shitty starter, great playoff bullpen weapon?

If Vogelsong keeps this up all year, I will eat 10 whole (metaphorical) crows including their beaks and feet.

In fact to make it real, how about a wager? If Vogelsong ends the year with an ERA below 3.75, I donate $20 to Junior Giants. If it's over, you do....deal? Unlike betting against one's own team to lose, I'm eager to make donation to that worthy charity.

Also, are you going to answer my question?
