But, why? Why would the Bengals let a generational talent walk away from them? Do you believe they don't have the money or are you just a realist and believe this is just the way they operate? I mean, it's a ridiculous idea - You might have a hall of fame talent in his mid-20s that has already won a triple crown and likely will still get better.
I think this is the way they operate. I don't think this ownership is about to start setting financial records outside of Burrow, their QB, who Mike Brown loves and the only position he respects. At least not at these prices.

Bengals will never learn - just sign the guys. The cap will re-set every year, and what worries you about the cap/cash will fix itself in a year, or 2.

Remember all the hemming and hawing about paying Bates? Look at what that would be now...PEANUTS.

Just - stop the excuses. Sign the players.

Could we get DE Malcolm Koonce, DE Chase Young and LB Dre Greenlaw for the $40 million we would have spent on Hendrickson?

The Bengals certainly don't want to pay Trey 40 million a year.

in a few years though, that will seem like a bargain. that's what the Bengals FO does not understand.

The Bengals have too much backlash from having their #1 salary players injured and on the bench, their style is to spread out the talent so that things aren't all dependant on 1 player being well.

I don't see how they let Chase go though. J'marr Chase is basically our entire offense.
if we sign Tee, you know damned well he's spending 6 weeks on the bench at least.

I know this is not usual, but at what point do these tv networks say, we can't afford more than this amount, you can't keep raking us over the coals. So now the tv contracts stay stagnate, or possibly even sink a little and these players are now used to making 40-55 million a year. Its already impossible for fans to afford to go to games unless it is the one thing they choose to splurge on unless they are rich.

I know that is a very small chance of that happening, but at what point does the piggy bank get full or burst?

NFL owners are making more profit now than at anytime in history. The cap keeps rising because profits keep rising. The cap is set as a percentage of revenue - So, blaming the players for their contracts or ticket prices just doesn't make much sense to me. It's not like this is a league that is in deficit and the owners are spending irresponsibly - They are spending at the rate they are contractually obligated to spend. As far as ticket prices and TV subscriptions - Yes, the cost of these things is high..... But, for the most part, stadiums are sold out, TV audiences are huge, and people continue to buy shit from the proshop. So, you take all of those factors and now you add the impact of legalized gambling on top of it, and profits are going to accelerate - Not decline. Don't underestimate this last point - The legazliation of gambling will destroy a lot of lives and homes, but it will also make some already wealthy people (NFL owners) even more rich than they were before.

Those are all very good points. I concede my point.

At some point maybe Bengals fans will stop getting suckered into thinking they will ever spend to the cap. Just cause they don’t have Butch Hobson writing about 20 million set aside for draft picks and injuries doesn’t mean they don’t still operate this way.

All this talk about future cap hits. In a league with a continuously growing revenue stream and cap ceiling. On a team that will never utilize the extra money. Because it’s going into the family’s pockets.

they've always had their own spending limit in mind, and they even often refer to it as the salary cap, when it is in fact not the NFL salary cap. In the past, it was around 90% of the salary cap, I don't know about now though.

So far, all the reports/rumors on Higgins and Chase are positive - so that's something. Let's hope this gets done, if it does, as I said before - they needed 2 of the 3...and they will hit that mark. We'll see...

You guys figue the Bengals front office is working today, or are they taking a day off after adding 2 or 3 back-ups and a run-stuffing nose tackle? Maybe they're out enjoying the weather. Maybe they're taking in some college conference tourney action? Maybe Wednesday is Walmart day in the Blackburn household?

Backups or not, that was a lot of action for the Bengals normal MO.

If we can sign Jenkins and Ojulari, while signing at the very minimum Chase to an extension, I will be pretty happy with the Bengals offseason prior to the draft. I would love to keep Hendrickson, but if they can't afford all that and we can get a 1st and something else for Hendrickson that would be great. I just don't want to see Hendrickson in the AFC.

Zeitler went to play for the fucking Titans for 9 million. Are you going to tell me that 9 million would break our bank to settle one guard position for the season? Jesus, what the hell are we even doing?

For those keeping score, bad interior OL play has cost the Bengals the following:

- Joe Burrow’s left knee
- a Super Bowl win
- a return trip to the Super Bowl
- another season ending injury to the star QB
- a triple crown winner of horrific play

Yet the Bengals will still continue to ignore the guard position. They will continue to tell everybody it’s not a position of value. Joe Burrow will continue to take a beating.

Sell the team.

It's puzzling. The first day of free agency after the Super Bowl the Bengals immediately addressed offensive line issues by adding two established NFL starters. Then they added a very talented (but beat up) tackle. They probably had as much cap space that offseason as they do now. What the hell happened? It honestly feels like they aren't trying and that is sad.

It’s painfully obvious they’re using these self imposed contract stalemates as an excuse to not do anything.

Gut feeling. I don’t think Katie and Troy liked their QB calling them out in the media. Or Duke Tobin for that matter. This is the punishment.

I’m sure they’ll blame Joe at some point next season when they are 4-8 for demanding they pay Tee. The fact he wouldn’t accept their bullshit lowball offer from 2 years ago is the reason they couldn’t shell out 5 mil for a starting right guard or 3T.
