During the preseason, it makes the most sense to me to play the rookies early and often. Doughty would gain nothing by getting any first teams reps. In reality, he is a backup even if he ends up starting the first game of the season. Thomas should get as many reps as possible.

I agree. Doughty will make the team. He is the only vet safety we have (merriweather doesnt count since he hasnt really played for us) and is a stalwart on special teams.

Maybe. I don't think who starts in the first game means much. Probably means more that they want to see what Thomas can do, know what Doughty can and can't do at this point. He needs the reps.
