that some goalies back in the 60's and even into the 70's played the position without wearing a mask. Man, Ehrhoff has a rocket from the point.

Nasty!

Pretty hard for the refs to blow that down as the rebound was put in immediately.

I think even if he wasn't injured they would have scored on that rebound.

It is pretty hard to believe that goalies didn't wear masks for so long. More incredible is that no goalie died when they didn't wear masks. Who knows to what extent the damage would have been to McBackup, but it would've been nasty for sure.

I guess that's why they didn't go down so much back in the day.

That was pretty nasty though.

The players didn't shoot as hard back in the day either. The odd player had a "heavy" shot but not many were able to shoot 90mph+ lazers like most players today.

That didn't stop Crylisle (get it? CRYlisle!) from turning on the waterworks.

McElhinney suffered a cut on his forehead and flew with the team home to Anaheim. But Carlyle was incensed that the whistle wasn’t blown when his goalie, who was bleeding profusely, went to the ice.

“What’s the call when a goalie gets hit in the mask with a slapshot?” Carlyle asked aloud. “If it’s happening to the Canucks, what would you be saying? You’d be saying they should have blown the whistle.”

They also didn't have curved sticks which elevates the puck more. That was some shot though. earlier this year Rask had his mask knocked off his head by a shot. Luckily, he wasn't injured

Those now illegal curves in the 60's were insane, the puck would move like a curveball.

With the new composite sticks, a goalie would have been killed with no helmet.
